Often times, athletes are destined for success. It’s in their blood, in their genes and passed
down from their parents. This is especially true for Buffalo State track and field athlete Jazmin
Dunham.
Following in the footsteps of her mother, Dunham’s track and field days began at a track camp
in her community, where her mother worked. She began running at the camp when she was 11-
years-old and has been involved in the sport ever since.
Dunham, a junior health and wellness major – with a minor in coaching – best describes
herself as nice and caring, as well as extremely laid-back and humble.
To Buffalo State assistant track and field coach Dustin Dimit, Dunham is dedicated, loyal and
the team leader. Dunham models all the right behavior in practice, according to Dimit.
One of her teammates, Sasha Henry, would agree.
“She’s very encouraging,” Henry said.
Dunham always wants to win and is always pushing her teammates to do what it takes to win,
according to Henry.
The junior also shows leadership by helping her fellow teammates.
“(Dunham) always puts the needs of the team first,” Dimit said.
To Dunham, being a leader is “something that has always been there.”
Dunham’s successes have been plentiful in her career at Buffalo State, from school records to
All-America honors.
The hurdler and sprinter currently holds school records for indoor track in the 300- and 200-
meter dash, as well as the 55- and 60- meter hurdles. She is also included in the group of four
who holds the record for the 4×200-meter relay.
Dunham is also a fixture in Buffalo State’s outdoor track record book. Last season, she ran the
100-meter hurdles faster than any Bengal ever has. She is also a part of the group who set the
record in the 4×100-meter relay.
On top of the seven records she currently holds, Dunham has been named an All-American at
both NCAA Championships she has competed in.
“A combination of talent and work ethic,” Dimit said of the key reasons for Dunham’s success.
Dunham’s track IQ and her ability to adapt quickly are additional factors that have enabled her to
be successful, according to Dimit.
Support from her coaches and her family, along with natural talent, are what Dunham personally
believes to be the key factors to her success.
The next stop in Dunham’s career at Buffalo State is the Division III Indoor Track & Field
Championships in Naperville, Ill., this weekend. She has expectations to continue her success
of years past at the competition; she was part of a relay team that finished second in the 4×100–
meter relay in 2011 as a freshman and finished fifth in the 60-meter hurdles last year as a
sophomore.
“I don’t want to come back empty-handed,” Dunham said.
Dunham will compete in the 60-meter hurdles at the Championships this year, which is what she
considers her favorite event. She is ranked fourth heading into the race, based on a qualifying
time of 8.74 seconds at the Brockport Invitational on Feb. 1.
Beyond Dunham’s aspirations of winning a national title this weekend, she would like to see
more athletes qualify for outdoor nationals. But ultimately, Dunham would like to win outdoor
nationals.
After her college years are finished, Dunham plans to stay involved in track and field by running
for track clubs. She also plans to coach track and field at the collegiate level.
