The Record was recently recognized among the state’s top student publications of 2012 from the New York Press Association, winning two awards in the 2012 Better College Newspaper Contest.
The Record collected first prize for Best Sports Coverage and received an honorable mention for General Excellence in the association’s annual collegiate contest. The awards are The Record’s first ever from this contest.
Student publications from colleges and universities submitted entries for judging across the contest’s seven categories.
Judges in the sports coverage category were impressed by The Record’s all-around coverage of Buffalo State’s sports teams.
“Wow! This is the kind of newspaper (student-run or not), that will ensure that print newspapers will not only survive, but will thrive,” judges noted. “GREAT sports photos – run large – just the way we like them. Great color reproduction. Page layout’s crisp, good mix of stories. Good, broad coverage. Great graphics. We’re impressed!”
Among the award-winning issues submitted for the Best Sports Coverage consideration were the April 4-10 edition, which covered the sudden death of longtime Buffalo State softball coach Sandy Hollander in April, 2012, and the Sept. 19-25 issue, featuring the Buffalo State football team’s historic upset over the nation’s top-ranked Division III school.
The panel of judges also recognized The Record in the General Excellence category, noting the strong overall quality of the paper week in and week out.
“Clean, nice design. Good product,” judges remarked. “Good local news coverage.”
The recognition comes as The Record celebrates its 100th year of publication.
