Deep down in me somewhere lives another self. It is a self that is hankering for a daily wild
experience.
This identity not only resides inside of me, but I believe that it resides inside of many.
Sometimes we give it attention, and other times we do not. I call that self “Foodie.”
The epitome of all things that food aficionados crave is adventure – one wild rollercoaster ride
after the other. The rush gets stronger with each experience, and foodies are resourceful.
They go to one restaurant for dinner, and disregarding that restaurant’s dessert menu, will then
hit the best bakery across town for great dessert and will travel a mile for their favorite anything.
They plan spending their money on other things based on how and what they will eat.
Foodies think about the future. They are methodical eaters. They believe that with each bite of
cake, there must be an equal scoop of ice cream to accompany it.
Every bite of food must taste the same or better. If the last bite of a burger has no ketchup, a
foodie will travel an immeasurable distance for just a dab to make that last bite worth it.
Foodies are particular. They are selective in their consumption. They are willing to wait for 2
hours for a reservation at their favorite restaurant because they know the food is worth the wait.
They believe in tasting the real thing or nothing at all. They prefer foods from scratch rather than
foods from box-versions. Foodies believe in quality. Foodies love meeting food connoisseurs
who will stoke their foodie-centric egos and sell them the best quality everything.
Foodies like and follow food on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. They download food apps
on their iPhones, iPads, Androids and other devices to grasp the latest trends. Epicurious and
Urbanspoon are must haves.
Foodies are passionate. They spend hours reading cookbooks and food magazines for pleasure.
They value watching the Food Network, the Cooking Channel and other food programming that
caters to their niche.
They write long lists of restaurants they must visit some day. They take leisure walks through
supermarket aisles just to satisfy their little foodie eyeballs.
Real foodies share new food with other foodie’s so that both could evaluate the quality, texture,
uniqueness, presentation and, of course, flavor. Foodies are offended by those who rush through
good meals. Foodies are especially offended when meals are not prepared with love and passion.
We run to free samples and we want to be the taste testers on holidays and special family
gatherings. We care about food. We eat food not just because we have to, but because we love to.
The lifestyle of a foodie has endless exploratory possibilities of not only food, but adds
deeper meaning to life. If you read this and say “That is me,” then you are an official foodie.
Congratulations!
