Mixed reactions mar Springfest

The United Students Government Springfest Concert featuring Wale, with Kirko
Bangz and DJ White Panda will be held Saturday in the Buffalo State Sports Arena.

Doors open at 5:30 p.m., and the show will begin at 7 p.m.

Tickets sold out within the first few days at the Campbell Student Union box office.

“We had 1,500 tickets sold on Monday, 1,200 tickets sold on Tuesday and the
remainder was sold by 3:30 Wednesday afternoon,” box office assistant Benjamin
Streeter said.

Christina Germann, USG executive vice president, said that although it is impossible
to please each student, it seems like many of them will enjoy this year’s Springfest.

“In my opinion, Springfest will be successful this year,” Germann said. “I feel that
many students are satisfied with our performers for this year. The line for tickets
was long each day that they were on sale.”

Kendra Alexssander, a sophomore biology pre-med major from Rochester, is excited
about Springfest.

“There’s going to be lots of people there,” Alexssander said. “All the performers are
pretty established.”

According to Germann, Springfest is a good way to forget about your troubles for a
while before exams.

“It’s a way to focus on having a good time for a night before the stress of finals
comes,” Germann said.

Not all students feel so strongly about this year’s Springfest.

Grace Taravella, a junior writing major from Long Island, said she’s not going to
Springfest. She said that if the students were able to help choose the performers,
she’d be more likely to attend.

“I’m not familiar with Kirko Bangz, and I’m not a fan of Wale,” Taravella said. “I’m
really upset that the students didn’t get to choose the performer this year.”

Eric Sauerzopf, USG president-elect, looks forward to getting more student input for
next year’s performers.

“I would like to get some different genre performers for next year,” Sauerzopf said.
“I know all students do not like rap.”

Sauerzopf said that he plans on having surveys in order to be able to really gauge
what the students want to see and hear.

“Student surveys are an excellent idea,” said Shakera Murray, a sophomore from
Brooklyn, N.Y. “They’ll give us the opportunity to choose who we want to see and
have a better chance to fully enjoy the experience.”

Murray added that she would like to see USG consider some different genres.

“I would like to see pretty much anything except rap, maybe something punk rock,
r&b or indie. Anything different,”

“I’d like to see some alternative performers like Fun.,” Taravella said. “Maybe even
see some pop performers.”

According to the USG Buffalo State blog, choosing the artists who perform at
Springfest is a very tough decision.

“We can only imagine how difficult it is to attempt to please the masses,” said
Senator Sherrell Pope. “Buffalo State College is a very diverse campus. Diversity
would expectedly affect the preferences of those who attend.”

Sauerzopf believes Buffalo State will definitely have a big turnout for Springfest.

“The tickets already sold out which is fantastic, and it shows the dedication and hard
work of the current existing USG representatives.”

Germann hopes that with the students’ help, USG can book future Springfest
performers who have wider appeal.

“It’s hard to give an opinion on performers that were not chosen yet,” Germann said.
“But I do hope that USG continues to receive student input and try to please as many
students as possible.”
