WHITEWATER, Wisc. — Buffalo State football pulled off its biggest win in program history Saturday when the Bengals became the first team since 2008 to defeat three-time defending national champion Wisconsin-Whitewater in a 7-6 come-from-behind win at Perkins Stadium.
Buffalo State trailed 6-0 with 1:35 remaining in the fourth quarter when quarterback Casey Kacz led the Bengals 75 yards down the field before connecting with Ryan Carney from 10 yards out for the game-winning touchdown with three seconds to play.
“Although we played fairly well in all phases, this win goes to the defense for standing tall all day and giving the offense a chance to deliver at the end,” head coach Jerry Boyes said in a news release. “This was the biggest win in Buffalo State Football history. This shows us what we are capable of, and now we need to build on this.”
The Warhawks‘ 46-game win streak was the longest active win streak in college football on all levels and the fourth longest win streak in the history of college football on any level.
UW-Whitewater has made seven straight Stagg Bowl appearances, winning the national title four times during that span, including each of the past three seasons.
Kacz finished 18 of 33 for 274 yards with two interceptions and the final touchdown pass. Carney had four catches for 79 yards and a score.
Pasquale Vacchio led the Bengals’ defense with 19 tackles, limiting the Warhawks to just 311 yards of total offense. Junior transfer Chris Hall added six tackles and a pair of interceptions, including a pick of the desperation pass to seal the victory for the Bengals. Hall now has five interceptions in three games.
The Bengals improve to 2-1 while UW-Whitewater is now 1-1. The win comes in the first ever meeting between the two teams.
