My heart broke last week when I heard the news that Reggie Bush, running back for the Miami
Dolphins, was saying negative things about Buffalo women.
I’ve had a crush on Reggie Bush for years. I always thought he was a handsome and talented
gentleman.
I have watched his football games and appearances on various talk shows. Seeing him always
made me happy, back when I thought he was a nice man who I’d have a wonderful future with.
However, Bush recently criticized women from the Buffalo area during an interview on the Paul
and Young Ron radio show in South Florida.
The radio show hosts told Bush that it was going to be 30 to 40 degrees here in Buffalo for
Thursday night’s Bills vs. Dolphins game. Bush said that temperature range was warm for
Buffalo and the hosts responded by saying that it would be good football weather.
What happened next was the truly heartbreaking part of the interview. The hosts said that women
were going to be topless in that “warm” weather, and said Bush wouldn’t want to see that.
He laughed and confirmed their statement saying, “Not Buffalo women.”
As soon as Bush’s comments were heard, local news stations were reporting on the interview.
People got all fired up over social media and I personally was shocked and disappointed that
Bush would be such a bully.
I’ve been such a big fan of Bush’s for so long, that his comment mocking the city where I was
born and raised truly hit home.
Women in Buffalo let their voices be heard this week and made sure Bush knew that he was
wrong. Reggie Bush responded to the uproar by tweeting that his previous comment on the radio
show was “a joke.”
I don’t find his comment very funny. Though the topic of the interview turned humorous and
inappropriate when the hosts said that Buffalo women would be topless at the game, I think Bush
took it too far by implicating that the Bills don’t have a good-looking female crowd.
Many local football fans were happy Thursday night when the Bills beat the Dolphins. It was an
important win for us to show Bush that his negativity isn’t welcome here.
Though it would be hypocritical to mock Bush like he mocked us, I have to point out that Bush’s
running performance came up short in Thursday’s game.
We’re a proud bunch here in the Queen City and we don’t put up with cruel criticism.
Unfortunately, the negativity is something that we’ve had to deal with all too often.
Last year, Tom Brady, the New England Patriots quarterback, insulted the hotels in Buffalo. He
said, “they’re not the nicest places in the world.”
Brady has since apologized after many local hotel and tourism officials defended our hotels.
Bush and Brady are just famous NFL players who underestimated the pride that we Buffalonians
have for our home and for each other.
It wasn’t very fair of either of them to make negative comments about a city that would gladly
welcome them back to show them what a great community we truly are.
We’re not going to sit back and let professional athletes mock our home or our neighbors.
Our city is filled with ladies who aren’t only stunning, but who are also brave enough to be
outspoken when famous athletes try to make us look like we’re the underdogs.
I’d say that Bush is welcome to return to Buffalo to acknowledge he was wrong and to apologize
for his comment. While we wait for him to pack his bags for a trip back to our city, I’ll gladly
keep defending the women of Buffalo against my former “Prince Charming.”
He insulted my city, and I’ll choose to support Buffalo over Bush any day.
