Lack of bike locks breeds unfair commuting

Most Buff State students, commuters or not, would benefit from more bike locks on
campus.
I've only been biking to campus for a few weeks now, but I'm already appalled at the
lack of secure places to lock one's bike. The only two locks I've seen are just outside
the union and they aren't secure in the slightest. They both had zero bikes locked to
it, while neighboring signs and lampposts were full.
Does this mean that people who bike are inconsiderate? Would they rather create
what could be considered an eye sore to some by locking their bikes all over
campus?
No, they do it to be closer to their classes and to feel confident that their bike is safe.
It may seem foolish to one who commutes via motor vehicle and can only complain
of the atrocious parking situations, but once you make the move to a bike, you will
begin to realize the frustrations of the biking community.
Although bikes don't match the upright cost of a car, one's transportation is a crucial
part of their daily life, and leaving it on a rusty rack from the 1980s is not the most
appealing move to someone who has just spent $300 on a new bike.
What am I asking? What can you do to help?
All we need are stable locks outside of each building, similar to Buffalo First, the
group who spearheads local businesses and is a major player behind the blue
Buffalo locks you see throughout the city. As a student here I'll be playing my part
by speaking to our new USG President and those concerned members of our student
council to see just what needs to be done financially and otherwise to make this day
dream a reality.
Hopefully in the weeks to come this will become a major topic of discussion
throughout the campus and maybe we'll all get to see a bit of construction that
would actually benefit us.
And to those of you who live here and don't ride, you're missing out on a great
scene. Not only will you not have to bother with the metro and its typically crowded
buses, you will also be engaging in this wonderful activity commonly known as
exercise. It's the best of both worlds!
To the naysayers, to those who are unconvinced of the benefits of riding, and having
a safe secure place to leave your bike while you pursue your education here at
this wonderful establishment, I say this: be aware of the world around you, and be
aware of those who might not have the same options as you when it comes to travel.
Get down with a local cause and help your fellow students with something we all
deserve.
