The Buffalo State women's basketball team opened the SUNYAC portion of its schedule
last weekend, dropping a 56-52 decision to Oneonta on Friday before losing to New
Paltz 58-50 on Saturday.
With the losses, the Bengals fell to 0-2 in SUNYAC play for the first time since the 2010-
11 season. They're 2-3 overall.
"Very disappointing weekend when you look at how close both games were," head
coach Sue Roarke said. "We're a young team so we're working on the fly but I thought
we should have came out with both wins honestly."
On Friday, the Bengals found themselves playing catch up the whole game and trailed
28-16 at halftime. The team fought back and even took a 46-45 lead after Bianca Smiley
hit a jumper with 4:23 remaining, but Oneonta reclaimed the lead with a key three
pointer and some free throws to secure the win.
Mistakes were key for the Bengals. Mental lapses led to 25 turnovers that the Red
Dragons turned into 23 points.
Smiley led the Bengals with 14 points and was the only Bengal to finish in double digits.
Freshman point guard Kelly Kell finished with 8 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists.
"I'm just looking to help this team anyway I can," Kell said. "Obviously it's hard coming in
replacing a player like Barb (Kiliszek), but I'm just looking to contribute anyway I can no
matter if it's scoring, rebounding or passing."
Roarke said that Kell is an intense player.
"She is our energy player when you look at this team, definitely," Roarke said. "She
gives us the intensity on offense and defense and that's why she's out there."
On Saturday, the Bengals didn't seem to have any problems and raced out to an early
18-6 lead less than eight minutes into the game. They also took a 31-23 edge into
halftime.
The second half proved to be the opposite of the first, though, as the Hawks nearly
doubled their first-half shooting percentage in erasing a double-digit deficit.
After shooting just 2-of-13 (15%) from three-point range and 7-of-14 (50%) from the
stripe, the Hawks improved to 5-of-8 (62%) from beyond the arch and 40% from the
field to pull off the comeback win.
"The biggest issue I thought was our consistency," Smiley said. "We have to play more
consistent for 40 minutes and not in halves or spurts".
Roarke agreed.
"We haven't put one complete 40-minute game together yet and to win games in our
conference we must look to do so."
Smiley once again led the Bengals with 17 points and seven rebounds. Ashley Wallace
grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.
Turnovers once again killed the Bengals as they committed 23 compared to the Hawks'
13.
"I saw some good things this weekend but obviously we are a young team and we have
some things to work on. But I like where we're at right now," Roarke said.
The Bengals will hit the road this weekend as they take on Potsdam at 6 p.m. Friday
before playing Plattsburgh at 2 p.m. Saturday.
