Smile! You're on Candid Camera
By Mike Meiler
On September 19, 2012
Another week, another controversy on a 2012 campaign trail that seemingly grows
more ridiculous the closer we get to Election Day.
This time, it isn't our typical case of a candidate slinging semi-factual campaign
speak around and turning to jelly when somebody called them out after crunching
the numbers.
No, this time it was one of our two candidates, a certain rich white guy, who was
caught talking when he thought the cameras were off.
Caught on a hidden camera, republican candidate Mitt Romney said that 47 percent
of Americans are dependent on the government and feel that they are victims who
are entitled to food, healthcare and everything else that the current government
supplies.
Well, Willard, I'd like to see you talk your way out of this one.
If you've read my pieces before, it probably seems like I'm a left-wing Romney hater.
I'm not. Politics, to me, is one of the most ridiculous enterprises around, and
unfortunately for Mr. Romney, he happens to keep himself at the top of the
ridiculous pyramid.
In our digital day and age, when almost everybody has cell phones that can take
pictures and record sounds and video, when will these people learn? You're always
on the record, whether you know it or not, and if you're going to say something
stupid, even as a joke (and believe me, I know that feeling as well as anybody), you
better be very, very sure that you're very, very trusting in who you say it to and
who's surrounding you.
It makes you wonder where the line is for the American public. I'm sure this is
nowhere near it, but what will one of these talking heads eventually say that will
make Americans collectively gasp, giggle and completely give up hope on their
candidacy? What's the last straw?
We've seen politicians cross most lines, right? Race, class and sexual orientation are
probably the three topics that most Americans tread lightly around. But for some
reason we've seen more than our share of politicians run those natural stop signs
and come out unscathed from the resulting crash.
The lesson for politicians rings true for any young professionals: be wary of your
surroundings, because there is almost always something somewhere with the ability
to record you. And if you do something stupid, it's likely to haunt you.
