So sick of politics

By Mike Meiler
On March 25, 2012

I'm done with politics. Done. Kaput. Finished. As in no more.

Our system is a complete joke. Watching Grand Ol' Party candidate (and yes, that's
what "GOP" actually stands for) Willard Romney (more commonly known as "Mitt"
because, apparently, it sounds more normal) attempt to appeal to southerners at a
rally in Alabama put me over the edge.

Romney, a very rich (seriously, very, very, very....well, you get it), very proper guy
from Massachusetts, welcomed greeters with an emphatic, "Mornin' y'all," which
he followed with a story about how he "got started right this morning with a biscuit
and some cheesy grits."

It's sad, really, watching a grown man attempt to cater to a group of people in such
a simple, stereotypical way. Romney has no place ever using the word "y'all," and
if that and talking about grits is his attempt to endear himself to Southerners, he
should be ashamed.

It's not just Romney, though. It's Barack Obama winning an election through
millions in campaign funds and Facebook. It's Newt Gingrich being, well, Newt
Gingrich, and still getting consideration for the vote. It's Sarah Palin, Rick
Santorum's last name (Google it, I dare you) and the Tea Party. It's what became of
the Occupy Movement.

Sometime in our country's history, politics changed from an honor and duty to a
business.

Somewhere down the line, we forgot to ask what we could do for our country and
reverted to our pre-JFK ways. I'm no super-patriot, but the idea of someone in a
position of such power using it for his own monetary gain (especially when they
make over $500,000 a year to be president and a $200,000 yearly pension when
they're out of office already) is sickening.

Everything in politics is driven by greed. Even the Occupy movement, which worked
wonderfully on Wall Street, became about personal greed and ridiculous demands,
including an increase of the minimum wage to $18 per hour and the end of the war
on drugs.

People vote based on what benefits them, and politicians will say anything to earn a
few extra votes, because if they win, they get a big payday.

I mean, who hasn't seen one of the countless videos of politicians flip-flopping on
key issues over a matter of months?

It's like all modern politicians are walking robots programmed to say what's "right."

They have nothing in common with the average American, and we know that, so we
vote for the guy who does the best job appealing to us. They're spineless actors, and
we put them in charge of our country.

Just once, I'd like to see a candidate we could relate to. Someone with real-world
flaws and real-world beliefs. At least then, even if you disagreed with them, you
would know where they stood and where they'd stand at the end of their term.
Instead, we'll end up voting for whichever talking head we see the most.

I mean, really, who are these people? And why should we vote for them?

The two biggest things I'd want to know about a candidate are the two things I find
myself least knowledgeable of.

What kind of childhood does someone named "Willard Mitt Romney" have? How am
I supposed to be comfortable with my country being run by a Newt? Ron Paul... well,
I'm not even gonna start. And I'd better never, ever find myself flooded in Santorum.
