Bengals conclude forgettable year with two one-goal losses

Buffalo State lost back-to-back games this weekend against Potsdam, closing out their season with a
record of 6-18-1 overall and 3-13 in the ECAC West.
The Bengals were obviously disappointed with how the season concluded, but alternate captain Rio
Flynn was happy with the team's work ethic.
"The losses were an unfortunate way to end the season but we played hard and had a good time," she
said.
Both of the losses to the Bears were one-goal contests, losing 4-3 Saturday and 1-0 Sunday.
On Saturday, the first period was a back-and-forth affair, with neither team able to gain an advantage.
The score was tied 2-2 after one, but Potsdam came alive in the second period, scoring two goals to take
a 4-2 lead halfway through the frame.
The Bengals were able to cut the lead to one on Kara Goodwin's sixth goal of the season with just 32
seconds left in the period, but could not find a way to score in the third.
Goodwin added an assist on the night, while Tara Boliard and Nikki Kirchberger were the other goal
scorers for the Bengals. Jordan Lee kept the Bengals in the game, making 33 saves on 37 shots.
On Sunday, Buffalo State fell 1-0 to Potsdam in their season finale.
Lee was stellar once again, stopping all but one of the 26 shots the Bears threw her way. The Bengals'
power play struggled, going 0-for-8 on the day.
The only goal of the game came 5:14 into the first period, when Sarah Nelson scored her third goal of
the season for Potsdam. Jen Conophy made 22 saves for the Bears en route to her first shutout of the
year.
The Bengals closed out the season with just one win in their last 11 games.
Looking ahead to next season, the Bengals will need to replace some solid veteran leadership. Forwards
Tara Boliard, Courtney Carnes, Rio Flynn, and defensemen Lauren Mallo and Jen Seguin will all be lost to
graduation.
Flynn knows that in order for the team to succeed next year, young players will have to step up into
larger roles.
"Next season, the team has some large gaps to fill and some of the rookies will definitely have to step up
and take leadership of this team," she said.
Despite the loss of the five departing players, Buffalo State has 13 returning starters coming back next
season, including the freshman standout Kirchberger. She led the team with eight goals on the year, and
Flynn expects her to step into a bigger role for the team next season.
"Nikki is a hard working girl and that is shown in her play," she said. "She pushes herself and is not afraid
of taking the team on her shoulder."
Another big name coming back for the Bengals next season is Junior Melissa Ash, who was fourth on the
team in points with four goals and five assists. Coach Robert Burke said that she is a great leader for the
team and is a pleasure to have in the locker room.
Burke also said that he does have some commitments coming in for next season, but no specific names
were given.
