Men and women break pair of school records in tune-up for SUNYACs

A new school record was set by both the Buffalo State men's and women's track and field teams
Friday at the RIT Orange and Brown Invitational.
Sasa Vann earned a first-place finish in the 400-meter dash for the women's team, while setting a
new school record with a time of 58.63 seconds.
Bumkoth Jiak, Alex Ngabo, Austin Becker and Chris Clemons combined to set a Buffalo State
record in the distance medley relay with a time of 10:10.80, good for a second-place finish in the
event.
With the SUNYAC championships up next for the teams this Saturday, assistant coach Dustin
Dimit noted the meet at RIT served its purpose, "to just kind of tune up and get ready for
SUNYACs this weekend."
The women's team's success this season landed them the No. 15 spot in the United States Track
& Field and Cross Country Coaches Association national rankings last week. However, heading
into their meet at RIT, Dimit had only one thing on his mind for the team.
"Right now we're just focused on the SUNYAC Championships," he said.
The women took advantage of the opportunity for a tune-up before SUNYACs this weekend and
continued their season-long success.
They placed first in four events and second or third in six others. Vann, who played a big role in
the team's success Friday, gives credit to the coaching staff for their success this year.
"Everything they do has a purpose, even from what they tell us to eat and the exercises we have,"
Vann said.
Katrina Lambert also had a first-place finish, winning the 200-meter dash (26.66). Jazlyn Porter
was the top performer in the long jump (5.23m).
The men also fared well at RIT. They earned two first-place finishes and finished second or third
in seven events.
On top of being a part of the medley team that broke a school record, Jiak also earned first place
in the 800-meter dash. The freshman said he felt good about being a part of a school record, but
felt the meet was a bit slow and the team could have done better.
"We set it but we definitely could have run better," Jiak said in regard to setting a school record
in the distance medley relay. Their finish was good enough to be in the top 10 in the country and
would qualify for nationals.
Overall, Dimit was happy with how things went at RIT. The teams earned many SUNYAC
qualifiers and a couple of national qualifiers.
Preparing the teams for the SUNYAC Championships will be only marginally different than the
usual routine. The athletes will endure a slightly lighter week to ensure they are fresh going into
the championships.
With a balanced team on both sides, Dimit is optimistic about the team's chances this weekend.
he said he expects "a number of All-Conference performers and conference champions."
While Dimit added he strongly believes each team should finish in the top three in team scoring,
he is hopeful for first or second.
The teams will compete in the SUNYAC Championships at 9 a.m. Saturday at Brockport.
