The Buffalo State Community Academic Center is hosting "Voices of Entrepreneurship," the
second event of the West Side Roundtables Series, for the Year of the City from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
on Wednesday at 214 Grant St. in Buffalo, right next to Sweetness 7 Cafe.
Anyone is welcome to attend the event free of charge, according to the flyer.
Meg Dee, director of the CAC, said attendees will be hearing from a panel of entrepreneurs and
then members of the panel will be open to answering questions.
"The panelists have come from all over the world to start their own local businesses on Grant
Street," Dee said.
These entrepreneurs are going to share the history of their businesses and discuss their successes
and challenges, according to the school events calendar online.
Sue McCartney, director of the Small Business Development Center, said that the event will be
tremendously inspiring. She said that the panelists are exceptional people who have come to the
U.S. as immigrants and refugees on a quest to be an entrepreneur.
"These trailblazers have persevered and beat the odds of starting small businesses, and it'll be
beneficial for students to come hear their interesting, valuable words of wisdom," McCartney
said.
Dee said she and all of the panelists want Grant Street to be a shopping and business destination,
and that the panel event will celebrate the City of Buffalo and give students the opportunity to
take part in the development on Grant Street.
She said the objective of this event is for students to come network with local business owners,
learn about different businesses and hear about the thriving growth of Grant Street.
James Willens, a junior at Buffalo State, said he has closely watched Grant Street progress over
the past couple of years and sees a successful future for local businesses in the area.
"On Grant Street, local businesses such as barber shops, beauty shops, restaurants and grocery
stores will definitely flourish around the college community," Willens said. "This is because
students who live in the area will always need services like that."
The panelists are Louise Sano, owner of Global Villages, Jimmy Lorigo, owner of Lorigo
Meating Place, Zaw Win, owner of West Side Valley Laundry, Bonnie Smith, director of
Westminster Economic Development Inc., and a representative from The Massachusetts Avenue
Project.
Attendees will be hearing why local business owners have invested in the West Side community
to start their businesses that range from a craft, home, pottery and clothing store to a food store
and a laundromat.
The discussion will be moderated by McCartney. She and Smith will also be presenting resource
information on starting one's own business.
"The economic opportunities in America are one of the many reasons that people come to
America," McCartney said.
"Starting a small business in America is exciting."
McCartney said that the panelists are kind to be willing to share their great stories. She hopes
that the event will inspire students to strive for their goals like the entrepreneurs on the panel did.
"If you work very hard, you can be successful," McCartney said.
This event will promote new business and let people know what's going on in the Grant Street
area by giving students the chance to talk to business owners, hear about new opportunities and
network with each other, Dee said.
"Buffalo State and the West Side community have a relationship of working together and
creating partnerships," Dee said, adding that she hopes the panel event will help with that
connection.
