Winter Break important to college success

By The Record Staff
On December 6, 2012

It's finally here, everyone.

Very soon, we will be handing in our final assignments, taking our last exams
and getting ready for a much-needed break from classes and all the other
responsibilities of college life.

We've each dedicated 15 solid weeks to bettering our lives through hard work and
studying. It's time we reward ourselves with a little rest and relaxation. Your mental
health is just as important as your physical health, and both are vital to academic
success.

Getting a few weeks off to escape the mental rigors of college life is crucial. Getting
out of the dorms and into your own bed can serve as a sort of rehabilitation for the
average college student.

We encourage you to take full advantage of all that Winter Break has to offer. That
doesn't just mean sleeping in all day and playing video games.

It's important to take some time for yourself, but the people you surround yourself
with can truly make the season special. Sitting around, just as you would during the
semester, is not the way to celebrate a well-deserved break. It may seem tempting,
but you can do more and better things with your time.

So go ice skating. Find a hill and a tube, and get your friends together for sledding.

Have a big snowball fight with your siblings the way you used to when you were
kids. Visit your grandma and help her put a puzzle together, for Pete's sake.

Get out there and mix it up. Good old-fashioned, no-money fun is the name of the
game. Think of all the fun you had as a little kid, and pretend that you're 10 years old
again, when a week and a half off from school felt like forever.

Even if you don't like all the tradition and nostalgia the season brings with it, just
think of every television special and overplayed Christmas song as a tribute to your
freedom.

And when you do indulge in that special eggnog and sugar cookies, make sure you
do so responsibly. Enjoy your time out with friends and family you haven't seen in a
while, then make sure you get a ride home. Don't let these good times with the folks
you care about be your last.

We've got merely a handful of days before we're set free. Finish out strong and make
all your time here worth your while. Then, let the games begin.

Work hard now, knowing you've got five weeks off to rest, recover and get your
mind right.

Be safe and we'll see you next semester.
