Campus West receives upgrade

Campus West, which was built in the 1960s, is being renovated to temporarily house several
departments and offices affected by the renovations on campus.
The building was leased by the City of Buffalo and was a regular K-8 school where teaching assistants
were able to observe classes. The city didn't want to maintain the building anymore, so they cancelled
their contract with the college.
The closing of Campus West in the Buckham Campus School opened up space for several departments
to move there due to renovations at Houston Gymnasium, said Steven Shaffer, manager for design and
construction. These include the health and wellness, criminal justice and the athletic department.
"Health and wellness and criminal justice departments will be there temporarily in campus west until
the Houston Gym is renovated," he said.
Among the improvements being done is the installation of smart classrooms, renovation of bathrooms
and fire alarms, and replacement flooring.
"We are really excited to be in Campus West, it's really nice and more convenient for our students,"
said Scott Roberts, chair of the Health and Wellness Department. "It gives our students more space to
socialize and get work done."
"We have received bids from contractors and work is due to start in the coming months," Shaffer said.
The renovations are set to cost $500,000, and will include adding computer labs, painting and cleaning
of the building, and modification of the gym wing.
In the spring of 2013, departments and offices from Caudell and Upton halls will be moving to Campus
West due to renovations that will be done to those building.
The pre-collegiate program that occupies a small space at Campus West will remain until another
building is found to house that program. The child care center, which is open to children of
undergraduate and graduates students, faculty and staff, will remain at the site.
Renee Fellinger, a senior Individualized studies major, loves Campus West.
"The building is very spacious and convenient, the classrooms are bigger and more conducive to
learning," she said.
The building will go off-line when all of the various campus construction projects are completed, Shaffer
said.
"At the end of the renovations to the various buildings on campus, the campus west building will be
demolished," he said. "The final use of the building is not yet known."
