Parking problems: Who taught us how to drive?
By Jennifer Waters

Last Friday, after spending an exhausting eight hours trying to catch up on schoolwork, I
went to leave campus for work when I discovered a slight parking issue.
The blue boat of a Chevy parked next to my car was parked at such an angle that I could not
back my car straight out of the spot. The Chevy was parked so close to my car that I had to
climb through my passenger door to get in.
It was painfully evident that the driver of the Chevy is about as good at driving as they
are at parking - indicated by the fact that the entire left corner of the front of the car was
missing. Additionally, the hood was dented, the bumper was flopping around in the wind
and there was nothing above or in front of the tire, where a car would normally have a
quarter panel of the body. This motorist's driving habits may explain why one would keep
rosary beads hanging from the rear mirror.
Besides this major damage, there were scratches in the paint and a smashed passenger side
mirror - further evidence that the driver cares little about their property.
Despite the fact that UPD was circling the lot checking cars for parking passes, I dug
through my bag to find a post-it note for the considerate owner of this vehicle. I made sure
to write my message on the reverse side of the post-it so that the driver would see it when
they got into their car. However it may have blown away by the time the owner reached
his/her vehicle.
I don't understand why people are so inconsiderate of others.
College is supposed to be training on how to conduct oneself among others. So what
compels people to walk away from such a parking job?
I understand that the student may have been running late for class, or less understandably,
had been highly intoxicated when they parked. If this was the case, perhaps the UPD
officers, who frequent Lot R in the hope of writing another ticket, could have been the one
to leave a message for the driver.
All I am asking is that students take the time to straighten their cars out in the parking lot
before rushing off on your daily adventures.
