Democracy Matters works toward political reform
Letter to the Editor

Are you, like me, sick of the rising cost of college, the burden of huge student loans, cuts in
education and other social services, poor environmental laws and an economy that continues
to struggle? Then I have exciting news about what is happening today in New York State.
Governor Andrew Cuomo has challenged the state legislature to change Albany's "business
as usual" by creating fair elections, meaning elections where politicians would actually be
accountable to the citizens of New York, including its students, and responsive to their needs.
Cuomo is responding to the legacy of corruption and money scandals in Albany and to the
anger of New Yorkers at the political dominance of big money campaign contributors.
He wants to introduce a voluntary public campaign financing option for candidates running
for political office.
Why? Because with a public financing option - which has been working successfully in other
states and New York City for over two decades - we can create a practical, constitutional and
effective way to make elected officials listen to us.
By giving ordinary citizens the resources to run for office, independent of special interest
money, Cuomo believes we can break the stranglehold big donors now have on our
democracy.
It can mean that politicians spend time talking with their constituents and solving problems
instead of using precious hours each day to raise campaign money from wealthy contributors.
It can mean that highly paid corporate lobbyists will lose their clout. It can mean that if you
have good ideas, you can run for office even without millions in your bank account!
And the fact is - especially with Cuomo's strong endorsement and a huge coalition of groups
including civil rights, environmental, unions, women's groups and Democracy Matters - this
is almost within our grasp.
Democracy Matters is a nation-wide student organization new to Buffalo State this semester,
dedicated to fighting for campaign finance reform and helping to get students involved in the
political process.
Powerful corporate donors will fight to retain their grip on the political process. That's why we
need you!
Students at Buffalo State have an important role in deciding whether New York State will
have fair elections where everyone's voice is heard in shaping our future. If you want
your representatives in Albany to listen to you, join us in fighting for a fair and inclusive
democracy.
New Yorkers deserve a state government that is of, by and for the people of New York, not one
bought and paid for with big campaign checks. Together we can do it!
