PASO puts spotlight on various groups with Mix and Mingle

The Pan-African Students Organization is set to host "Mix & Mingle: Buffalo State
Interracial Edition" at 5 p.m. Friday in Bacon Hall 115.
The get-together will showcase various organizations, including PASO, the African
American Student Organization, Step Expression and Greek life. The Creative Studies
department is also involved.
"So this is going to be us reaching out to other organizations," said PASO president
Ebenezer Baawuah.
The main themes are unity and support. Students are encouraged to be open-minded to
the messages of other organizations and cultures. Each organization at the mixer will
have a couple of minutes to spread their word.
Although the event is labeled "Interracial Edition," PASO is not a group exclusive
to those of African decent. Its focus is on African issues and linkage throughout the
Diaspora, and anybody can aid in that effort. Youssouf Kaba, USG organization
representative, wants people from all backgrounds to join.
Kaba has been diligent in spreading the word of "Mix & Mingle," contacting numerous
campus organizations in the hope that each can bring something unique to the table.
"I want people to go out and join some org," he said.
Although PASO has its own agenda, it is clear to see that their care extends beyond
themselves. According to the organization's Bengal Connect profile, the plan is "to
enhance the lives of Buffalo State College students by providing social, recreational and
educational activities on Africa."
Baawuah noted that all students pay a mandatory activity fee, which funds events like
this. Students might as well get what they have paid for, and enjoy good company, music
and food in the process.
"Mix and Mingle" can be seen as a precursor to PASO's 6th annual cultural show, which
takes place Saturday. Titled "The Spirit of Africa," the event will showcase African
dancing, music, poetry, skits and Buffalo State's very own West African Drumming
Ensemble. It starts at 5 p.m. in the Social Hall.
"In addition to exciting, intricate rhythms, performances also include traditional songs,
dances, and costumes," the West African Drumming Ensemble's page informs.
PASO members are also excited about the upcoming BSU Orange Crush award show,
which they compare to the BET awards. Kaba said that it will be streamed live on
Buffalo State's website, and that Channel 3 will tentatively be broadcasting the show.
PASO's presence will also be seen at the annual fashion show on April 6. A jungle theme
is in the works, where jungles from all over the world will be celebrated. PASO members
will work to ensure cultural correctness and that attendees have fun.
This organization is keeping busy. With its focus on fostering community and spreading
the word of its cause, the message is sure to catch fire.
"Expect a lot of great things coming up," Kaba said.
