Student's commercial in national contest

For many people, the Super Bowl is more than just the NFL's league championship game.

It's also an excuse to watch some of the best commercials of the year. This year it might
give Buffalo State students the chance to see a spot created by one of their peers.

Carl Bailey, a senior theater major, is one of thousands of entrants in Doritos' seventh
annual Crash the Super Bowl Ad contest.

Bailey has the chance to win cash prizes, a trip to the Super Bowl in New Orleans or, if he
becomes a finalist, win an opportunity to work with Transformers director Michael Bay on
the newest installment of the film series.

Bailey's commercial, titled "YES!", is about a man who doesn't want to share his Doritos.

The spot stars Bailey and his five-year-old son, with a cameo from the Bailey's younger
daughter, as well.

"This commercial was inspired by my son and daughter," Bailey said. "I had several ideas
for commercials, but this was the least elaborate, easiest and quickest to shoot."

Though he'll face off against some stiff competition, Bailey isn't new to the scene. His IMDB
profile indicates that he's worked in film and acting since 1998.

His most recent work was on a documentary titled "Together We Stand," about the 1958
University at Buffalo football team. He is also CEO of his own company, Positive Nation
Productions, which he runs with his wife Ekaete.

It took Bailey a while to realize that it wasn't just acting that he needed to be good at.

"I have always loved cameras and filmmaking, but I just didn't realize the potential that I
had in the art of filmmaking," he said. "I had only been focused on acting. I have always had
ideas for commercials, short comedy sketches, and movies. Although I dreamed of having
them produced, I would write them down and that was it."

That all changed a couple of summers ago, when Bailey met Lou Rera, an associate
professor in the Communication department.

"Carl stopped by my office a couple of years ago to discuss his goals as a media production
major.," Rera said. "He struck me as determined and eager for information, so much so that
he wanted access to one of my filmmaking courses reserved for Buff State's television and
film art majors. I got him into the class and he found that narrative storytelling was very
much a direction he wanted to work in."

Bailey managed to find a kindred spirit in Rera through their discussions.

"(Rera) is possibly one of the coolest and most supportive and inspiring people I have ever
met. I felt like God had put him in my life for a reason," Bailey said. "I knew that I had to
learn from him, or at least be in the atmosphere of that level of creativity and talent.

Needless to say, I was not disappointed. He helped me to see beyond my mental limitations
and fill that space with technical knowhow."

Thus, Bailey was inspired by Rera, as well as by professors and classmates in the TFA
department, to go down his current path and to seek success at a higher level.

"I think it's great that Carl is giving the national advertising stage a shot. It takes initiative

to go beyond what's expected of you," Rera said of Bailey's entry. "The spot he wrote also
integrates (his) family with the whimsical and comedic nature of what Doritos does in their
spots in general. You can tell Carl analyzed that aspect just by watching what he did."

Entering the contest has also given Bailey the chance to hone his public relations skills.

According to his press release, he has already gotten support from the local community,
and it has paid off.

"Carl is very hard-working and dedicated," said Ekaete Bailey, Carl's wife and COO of
Positive Nation Productions. "He works well with people and builds relationships easily. He
is good at building networks that last, because he actually cares about people."

To watch and vote for Bailey's commercial, go to the Doritos Crash the Super Bowl app on
Facebook and type "Carl Bailey" into the search box. You can also watch and rate other
entries. The first round of voting ends on Dec. 14.
