Those involved in the Fashion Students Association can be seen strutting around campus
every day. Now their efforts and creativity are being brought to the runway in their yearly
fashion show.
The theme of the show is "Mondiale," which means "global" in French. The initial
purpose is to present to the audience various types of fashion all over the world in
multiple cities.
The show will start at 7 p.m. Friday in the Union Quad and will have a red carpet from
6 p.m. until the start of the show at. Photographers will be present to take photos of the
guests as they arrive.
FSA President Binta Barry said she wanted to make sure the students on campus are
recognized for their creative ability.
Barry said FSA's goal for the show is to make people comfortable with getting involved
on campus.
"Through a lot of FSA events, we want to encourage people to get involved in student
activities and to understand the bonding that goes on beyond a fashion show," Barry
said. "You meet people that you wouldn't have known before through events and
everyone will work together and become more involved."
Students run the entire show and all the designs are from several students at Buffalo
State, including the models and those backstage.
Trivet Jarmond, a sophomore at Buffalo State, is a participating model. He participated in
FSA's "Advance Your Swagger" fashion show last semester and said he looks forward to
participating in Friday's show.
"I expect it to be fun," he said. "There are going to be a lot of great designs so I'm
looking forward to it."
There is going to be an array of styles and cultural clothing from places such as London,
Africa and North America.
There will be a blend of traditional clothing from African countries such as Ghana,
formal clothing and different styles of street wear.
Featured student designers are Julianne Reich, Lisa Clark, Meghan McNicholl, Naquasia
Boyd, Dany Marcelino, Ashley Smith, Judean Griffith, Rebekah Robinson and Samuel
Boakye.
Student-run clothing brands such as Universal Mind F#ck and Freshdogs Clothing will be
represented in the show by models wearing pieces from the brands.
Sophomore Kuburat Ibikunle said she has concerns about the unusual outside venue.
"My expectations for the show are that it's going to be extremely cold, considering the
fact that it's outside," she said. "Nonetheless, I think it's going to be a bomb show."
"Mondiale" will be a collaboration with the Hospitality Club, Barry said. The Hospitality
Club will be participating in hosting the show and supplying the free food that will be
served to the audience members.
The Hospitality Club will also be ushering the red carpet affair for the introduction to the
show.
Barry said she wanted FSA to join with the Hospitality Club to give the Hospitality Club
more publicity on campus. The collaboration also gives the Hospitality Club a chance to
reach out to other organizations with similar events for future opportunities.
Although FSA's prior runway shows were a success, Barry said there's always room for
improvement.
"Of course whenever you go into a leadership position you always want to do better than
what was done before only to show progression," Barry said. "I want to take this show
from good to great."
As president, she said she feels as though the show should be looked at as more of a
production and hopes the effort that was put into planning the show comes through in the
final product.
Barry said she wants the show to put FSA where they need to be in regard to popularity
on campus and getting students involved with their events and programs. She also said
she feels the show will give FSA a chance to set the standards for other organizations and
show people what they're about.
"I just hope FSA shows that we're an organization to be taken seriously, as well as
encouraging other organizations to take the same stance in presenting their organization
to the student-body," Barry said.
Tickets to the show are available in the Campbell Student Union at the ticket booth or in
Rockwell Hall and are free for Buffalo State students.
