Events designed to welcome students

Buffalo State College welcomes new students as well as returning students back to the
college in a great way.
The Weeks of Welcome, which runs from Aug. 21 to Sept. 29, is a six-week long program
that boasts different outings, events, games and competitions.
Originally called "Success in Six," about 10 years ago, it was changed to WOW, though the
focus didn't change and is designed to connect new students to the campus.
Student Life Director Gail Wells said the program being six weeks long serves a vital
purpose.
"In approximately six weeks a student has decided whether they're going to stay at Buffalo
State or not," Wells said.
The theme of this year's program, along with the slogan, "Be Successful and Connected,"
is "Rock the Orange." The idea is to instill school pride and school spirit to let students
know they made the right choice in coming to Buffalo State.
"The idea of the program was to let students know that they can be academically successful
and that they can make social connection with faculty, staff and students," Wells said.
Amanda Patti, a freshman interior design major from Long Island, said she gained new
friendships after attending an event in the program.
"We connected and learned more about the people who live on our floor," Patti said. "I
definitely plan to return to Buffalo State after this semester."
Funded through Student Life, all of the events on campus are free to students, with certain
off campus events costing no more than $10, which covers transportation to and from the
event as well as admission.
Along with the Weeks of Welcome event for the new students on campus, there are also
events for the new commuter students.
Buffalo State on the Move is geared toward commuters and those off campus. It is a
semester-long program but is introduced during the Weeks of Welcome. Students have to
provide their own transportation to events.
According to Wells, it's designed to introduce commuter students to each other, get those
students engaged with the Commuter Council and get them aware of all the services that
Student Life provides.
Events planned from Sept. 12 through Sept. 15 include Cupcake Wars, Midnight Bowling,
Lasertron, the Anne Frank Project and the Underground Railroad tour.
Stephanie Mohorter, a freshman interior design major from Syracuse, went to an event in
the program during her orientation.
"I went to an event during our freshman orientation, but I'm really looking forward to the
midnight bowling and cupcake wars," Mohorter said.
A new addition to the Weeks of Welcome program is Buffalo State's first drive-in movie
that will take place Sept. 15 in Lot G on campus. The event is partnered with the African
American Student Organization who will be providing free hotdogs and drinks to
participating students.
"Hunger Games" will be the movie shown on the outdoor makeshift movie screen that will
be set up in the parking lot. Students are encouraged to bring their cars, blankets, pillows,
and chairs.
"The drive-in movie is the event I'm most looking forward to and I'm going to bring my
boyfriend with me," Stacey Spiller, a freshman business major from Williamsville, said.
Students can look up the details to these events online at the Student Life website, as well
as specific times, dates and fees. The WOW program also has a display in the glass cases in
the Campbell Student Union that students can check out.
"There are late night events, on campus events, events during Bengal Pause, as well as off
campus events so students have lots of opportunities to attend them," Wells said.
