The Science and Mathematics Complex is nearing its Phase One completion.
The 96,000-square-foot addition along the west side of the current Science Building will
accommodate research labs, teaching facilities, faculty offices, instrumentation rooms, an
advanced imaging suite, and a multi-story atrium.
"We are all very excited," said Randal Snyder, a professor in the biology
department. "Each faculty member will have their own research facility and office."
Currently, the science and math departments are housed in separate buildings.
"It'll help collaboration between science and math departments," he said.
The building will be home to the biology, earth sciences and science education,
chemistry, physics, and mathematics departments along with the Great Lakes Center for
environmental research and education.
The college will spend the rest of the fall and winter furnishing the building, according to
Steven Shaffer, manager of design and construction at Buffalo State.
A slight delay pushed Phase One back from the summer of 2012 to this fall. However,
Phase Two will continue on schedule, with an anticipated start of Spring 2013. Phase
Two of the construction is expected be completed by summer 2017, according to the
school's website.
Christa Construction has moved from the sub, to the prime contractor after Savarino
Construction Services Corporation pulled out, Shaffer said.
"Our project manager Dan (Herr) is down there everyday," he said.
Phase Two will start with a renovation of the current Science Building. The north wing
of the existing building will be renovated and the south wing will be demolished. The
renovated wing will include shared conference rooms, general classrooms, and all
department offices, said Shaffer.
The south wing will also include a state-of-the-art planetarium and greenhouse, which
will collect and store rainwater. The building will be environmentally friendly, which
utilizes 38 percent of recycled materials for construction and diverts 80 percent of
material byproducts away from landfills.
The heating and cooling systems will also be energy efficient. The project aims for
operations and design to be environmentally responsible and energy efficient.
The planetarium will be spherical in shape and will welcome students who use the main
entrance. It'll be set in transparent framework adjacent to a three-story sky-lit atrium.
Students will also be able to utilize two lounges, which will open in conjunction with
Phase One completion.
The estimated $110 million project will make Buffalo State a research facility.
The entire 224,000 square-foot, three-level structure will be one of two new buildings
currently in construction on the campus. The Technology building, which is currently on
schedule, is to be completed by summer 2013.
