Students have combined their love of the local community and their passion for art to
create the First Friday Gallery Crawl, an extension of Buffalo State's Visual Arts Board.
Every first Friday of the month, students gather in the basement of Upton Hall outside
room 115 C. From there, they head to select galleries on Elmwood and in Allentown. That's
the general plan for this Friday said member David Huurman, who is a senior fine arts
printmaking major.
"It's relaxing to just meet new friends and learn about the Buffalo art community," he said.
Huurman said he thinks not many people know about what all is happening in the local
community.
"Buffalo has always had a very avant-garde feeling," Huurman said. "It's also very
communal, I feel like people help each other out more with what they're trying to
accomplish."
As far as what galleries are on the agenda for this week, senior sculpting major and fellow
crawler Glen Stewart said there are a few main galleries they all would like to check out,
but that they just go wherever the art is.
"We have a very loose format where we just go with whatever's out there and open," he
said. "The first Friday holds a lot of opening receptions at different galleries."
Some of the group's favorite places to visit are Hardware, The Space at 224 Allen Street
and Indigo Art on Allen and Casa de Arte on Elmwood. Stewart said Casa Di Art is usually
by appointment only for their gallery but the owners will let the group in if they happen to
stop by. The gallery is also an art exchange run through the owners, bringing in art from
Cuernavaca, Morelos in Mexico and also sending work from Buffalo there.
"The places we go are very diverse. It's kitschy, from crafty shows to fine art, like in Casa de
Arte," Stewart said.
Drawing professor and gallery enthusiast Nathan Naetzker said that Buffalo is considered
to be one of the best cities to live in and work in as an artist.
"Buffalo and Buffalo State represent the art world today where anything goes," he
said. Everything from conceptual to representational art can be found here, along with
performance art, photography, film and sculpture.
Naetzker said that it is good for students to go on the first Friday because it is a fantastic
way to see a great variation of art in the local area. He said his favorite types of galleries are
non-profit ones because he feels any time a gallery depends on sales they change the work
shown.
For those interested in attending this Friday, Stewart said transportation can be arranged,
and for those who can't make it right at 6 p.m. he can be reached by cell at (716) 261-6531
so stragglers can catch up with the rest of the group.
