Bengals show their school spirit during Homecoming

Orange Crush is back.
This year's Orange Crush homecoming and family weekend at Buffalo State will take place
Oct. 23-27.
Tom Koller, chairman on the homecoming committee, explains that a big theme for
homecoming at Buffalo State is tradition.
"What we've tried to do is create tradition," Koller said. "You can't create tradition by doing
something one year and not doing it the next year."
According to Koller, the events that have been featured during homecoming year after year
will continue to be around and built upon.
The big events that have been around for a couple years will be back for another.
The King and Queen competition is one event that instills tradition. It's open to anyone who
wants to participate and the prize for first place went up significantly this year, as the king
and queen will each receive $450 to Barnes and Noble Bookstore.
The judging is based on a talent competition, Homecoming Jeopardy, and the participants'
presence when asked to answer a question about Buffalo State.
Homecomingfest, an event that's always a good turnout according to Koller, is around for
another year as well but will take place in Bulger Communication due to the construction in
the Union. It will take place at 9 p.m. on Oct. 26 and will feature a mechanical bull, "build-a-
Bengal," a photo booth, and new this year, the pumpkin carving competition.
"I'm really looking forward to the Homecomingfest, especially getting to build my own
Bengal," said sophomore Danielle McBride. "It's like the infamous Build-A-Bear Workshop."
Sponsored by the United Students Government, the pumpkin carving contest was added
this year to the Homecomingfest. Students will have to sign up by Oct. 19 by logging onto
Bengal Connect to reserve a pumpkin, and the carving will take place in the beginning of
the fest. Winning teams will receive a $25 gift card of their choice.
Sara Garfinkle, president of USG, is also a member on the homecoming committee. USG is
sponsoring the chicken barbeque at the Pep Rally on Oct. 25, the pumpkin carving contest,
and the Orange Crush Carnival on Oct. 27.
"The carnival's usually in the spring semester but we're doing it in the fall," Garfinkle
said. "It's free rides and free food as long as you have your student ID."
The plan to have the carnival in the spring semester as well is still being decided.
The big homecoming football game against Hartwick will take place at noon on Saturday,
Oct. 27.
"I'm hoping for a beautiful Saturday of sunshine, 65 degree weather, and for everyone to
come out and wear their orange and enjoy the day, their friends, and their family," Koller
said. "That's what Homecomings all about."
Along with the football game against Hartwick on Oct. 27, there are other sports games to
come out and support the Bengals. Men and women's hockey have games this week along
with women's soccer and volleyball.
The big homecoming parade before the game will start at 10 a.m. on Saturday and
participants are asked to be outside the Sports Arena by 9:45 a.m. To view the parade route
you can go online to the homecoming website by going to the athletics page and clicking on
the Homecoming and Family Weekend button at the top.
The competitions that are featured this year do have specific deadlines you will need to
register by. The banner competition deadline is Oct. 24, the lip sync competition it's Oct.
22, the Wegmans shopping cart competition is Oct. 24, the window painting competition
deadline is Oct. 18, and for the King & Queen competition you have to sign up by Oct. 22.
You can find all of this information, deadlines, and registration forms online at Buffalo
State's homecoming website.
To register your car or truck to participate in the homecoming parade you can contact
Koller at 878-6514 or at kollertc@buffalostate.edu.
"We'd love to have cars or trucks in parade," Koller said.
The homecoming committee has worked on these five days of events for over 8 months and
according to Koller it's going to be a great week.
"It's going to be a really fun week, a really exciting week, filled with lots of things going on,"
Garfinkle said.
