The Fashion Student Association will be hosting its fourth annual Mr. Smoove
Competition at 8 p.m. next Tuesday in Rockwell Hall.
The free event will exhibit the men of Buffalo State by having them present their
personality and fashion, showing the Buffalo State community what makes them
shine above the rest.
The judges who will evaluate this "shine" are Gail Wells, Buffalo State faculty
member and director of Student Life, Akil McCleod, academic advisor for the
educational opportunity program, Juliet Amoah, former FSA president, and Jeff St.
Dic, resident director of North Wing Hall.
The contestants will be assessed on stage presence, poise and attire.
"FSA holds this competition not only so students can become more involved on
campus," said Fatoumatou Binta Barry, FSA president, "but also so those shy
sweeties can have an opportunity to break out of their shells and exhibit what
makes them unique."
Contestants include seniors Michael Kancscar and Justin Thompson, and
sophomores Todd Colas, Donald Adrani, Kemar Williams, Youssouf Kaba,
Taliek "T.J." Singletary, Victor Rodriguez and Andre Lynch.
The contestants will introduce themselves in the Introduction Round, where
competitors will explain why they believe they should be Mr. Smoove.
Next, the contenders will model their casual wear, in which students style
themselves and explain why their everyday wardrobe is smooth.
In the Challenge Round, contestants are then asked to complete a series of tasks
which will be revealed during the event, the first elimination round following.
Remaining students will emerge in their best formal attire, play "The Dating Game"
where challengers use their sense of humor to make a preselected girl with a mouth
full of water laugh, and then participate in the Q&A segment.
After a second round of eliminations, the judges will crown a winner.
"The title Mr. Smoove is an honor," said Oliver Colbert, former Mr. Smoove winner
and one of this year's hosts. "I anticipate this show to be very entertaining as well as
competitive."
Winners will receive a crown, medal and the title of Mr. Smoove, as well as eligibility
to judge the following year's competition.
"I am excited to see fresh new faces come out and participate this year," Amoah
said. "I am looking for contestants with charm, character and confidence."
Barry said she hopes the event is a success and many students attend to support
their fellow students.
"I hope that our contestants have fun and, through seeing their enthusiasm and
experience, other students are encouraged to be more involved in campus events,"
she said.
FSA will also host their Fall Runway Show, MONDIALE, on Oct. 5.
Catering to Buffalo State College's theme Year of the City, student fashion designers
pick a global hotspot anywhere in the world in order gain inspiration for their
collection.
The event will take place beginning at 6 p.m. in the Union Quad with the Red Carpet
Hour. The show will start at 7 p.m.
