The Buffalo State men's hockey team failed to a secure a victory in either of its two home games
over the weekend, falling to Brockport 4-2 on Friday before tying Geneseo 4-4 on Saturday.
After a 3-0 season-opening victory over Penn State, the Bengals earned just one out of a possible
four points, falling to 1-1-1 on the season, 0-1-1 in the SUNYAC.
"We can't really be happy with one out of four points," said senior forward Trevor McKinney.
The Bengals fell behind early in Friday's game but were able to rally back from a 2-0 deficit.
Sophomore forward Nick Melligan scored late in the first and again early in the second to tie the
score.
"We didn't play the first period and that was the difference in the game," said head coach Nick
Carriere.
However, Brockport scored later in the second frame to take a 3-2 lead.
Brockport took the one-goal lead into the second intermission and were able to survive a
relentless Buffalo State attack for the final 20 minutes.
The Bengals held a 22-1 shots advantage in the third. That one Golden Eagles' shot found the
back of the Bengals' empty net while goaltender Kevin Carr was pulled for the extra attacker.
"(Friday) was just a lack of effort," said captain Mike Zannella. "A hangover, whatever you want
to call it. No excuses, we should have brought a much better effort (Friday) night."
On Saturday, it was the Bengals that jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the opening period. Geneseo
erased that deficit by the first intermission, however.
McKinney scored a power-play goal nine minutes into the game and Mac Balson earned his first
goal of the season just a few minutes later.
Just 48 seconds after Balson's goal, Geneseo got on the board with the man advantage. The
Knights would use the power play to score again late in the opening period.
Geneseo scored its third consecutive goal early in the second to give them a 3-2 lead, but
Zannella tied the game just a couple of minutes later.
Zannella would score again later in the second period, giving Buffalo State a 4-3 lead heading
into the final frame.
With Geneseo on the power play again in the third, the Bengals couldn't kill if off. Ryan
Bulach's shot found the back of the net for his second goal of the game, which sent the game to
overtime.
Both teams had its chances during overtime, but neither could score.
"It's disappointing from a coach's perspective just because you want that kind of effort
[Friday]," Carriere said.
Zannella said the team needs to build off of the past couple of games.
"We have to use this weekend as a lesson," Zannella said. "I think today was a good stepping
stone, but I don't think it's where we need to be."
The Bengals host Morrisville at 7 p.m. on Friday at the Ice Arena.
"We have to get our focus going for Friday and bring it for Morrisville," McKinney said.
Friday's game will conclude a four-game homestand. Following that will be an 11-game road
trip.
