Dimit sees improvement from teams at SUNYACs

The Buffalo State men and women's cross-country teams participated in the SUNYAC Championships
Saturday in a cold and rainy day Fredonia State College.
The hard work of both teams showed as the women beat their 2011 finish at SUNYACs while the men
had one of their best finishes of the last three decades. Despite the rainy conditions, head coach Dustin
Dimit was pleased in his team's ability to perform.
"We actually embraced the weather, everyone has to run in the same conditions so we just wrote up
a race plan that that they executed very well," Dimit said of his team's performance. "We beat some
teams that beat us the week before."
The women came out and improved on last year's finish, taking 8th out of a possible 10 teams.
Junior captain Victoria DeStefano finished first for the Bengals placing 41st out of 130 runners in the
6k (25:25) with teammates Sabrina Brooks and Ana Rivera finishing 47th (25:36) and 51st (25:43)
respectively.
Even though the team finished in the bottom half of the race, DeStefano praised her team's resiliency.
"I'm proud of everyone on the team for the sheer fact that we've known that we were near the bottom.
It's not a comforting feeling knowing that you're considered to be losers," DeStefano said. "Even though
we did finish 8th I'm proud of the fact that we made progress."
The men had a big weekend despite facing adversity during the race. They placed 4th of 10 teams - their
best finished since 1980.
Freshman Alex Ngabo finished 16th of 121 runners (27:16), one spot away from All - SUNYAC honors
while missing a shoe for over half the race.
"One mile into the race a kid from Cortland stepped on my shoe and it came off, I was angry because
I was with the lead pack," Ngabo recalled. "I tried to stop and tie them up but people were passing
me, I'm like, I can't do this, I couldn't feel my hands so I said I should continue running and whatever
happens, happens."
Ngabo's effort earned praise from Dimit.
"These things happen, but it was definitely unfortunate but it was impressive that he ran half of the race
without a shoe especially in those conditions," Dimit said.
Teammates Arturo Salas and Bumkoff Jiak finished 23rd (27:27) and 31st (27.42), respectively.
Ngabo wasn't the only Bengal to find himself in the midst of adversity during the race. Jiak tripped off of
the start, falling to last place in the pack.
Despite all the unfortunate circumstances facing the team, the Bengals ran hard.
Both the men and women's teams will travel to the NCAA Atlantic Regional on Nov. 10 at the University
of Rochester. Regionals may be the biggest challenge that the teams will face all year.
Although it's two weeks away, Dimit is confident in his teams' chances.
"Most of the work is already done now, it's all about staying healthy through two weeks hoping that we
don't get sick or injured in that time," he said.
