Team takes talents outdoors

The Buffalo State men's and women's track and field teams began preparation for the upcoming
outdoor season this week.
Fresh off a successful indoor season, the coaches and athletes alike are optimistic about the
outdoor season, as they are energetic and confident for similar success.
Heading into the first week of the outdoor season, assistant coach Dustin Dimit is looking for the
team to continue the progress they made during the indoor season.
"I was really happy with all of our athletes' progress throughout the indoor season," Dimit said.
"So going into the outdoor season, we just look for them to continue that and to continue to get
better."
The coaches are hopeful for a top-three finish at the SUNYAC Championships and a top-10 - if
not top-five - finish at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, according to Dimit.
The athletes will be able to continue their success as long as they stay true to their training
program, Dimit said.
The coaches will place a bigger emphasis on strength-training, as well. Dimit noted the plan to
"reboot the training to make sure we're peaking at the right time."
While there are no drastic changes to the preparation, some athletes will have to prepare for
different events. For instance, instead of running the 60-meter dash, sprinters will be running a
100- or 200-meter dash.
There are also a number of other outdoor events that are not included in the indoor season that
athletes will have to prepare for.
Extra throwing events such as the hammer throw, and distance races like the decathlon, are a
couple of new events athletes must prepare for.
Although these events aren't included in the indoor season, athletes have been preparing for
them all year long. And with the first outdoor meet this weekend, the team can now begin to put
their training into action.
"Now it's just kind of getting them the chance to come out and show what they can do," Dimit
said.
Several athletes have high aspirations for the outdoor season. Seeing the success athletes on the
team experienced during indoor - four Bengals participated in nationals earlier this month -
motivates athletes to work harder to earn greater success during outdoor.
"Just keep working hard and stay focused," sprinter and jumper Cory Cox said of what has to be
done to ensure continued success from indoor.
Though coming off of an All-America performance in the long jump at indoor nationals, Cox
recognizes several aspects of his jumping that need to be fine-tuned in order to continue his
success.
Cox intends on bettering his landings, better preparing himself mentally and putting a greater
emphasis on weight-training.
Treasure Glymph, a freshman hurdler, enters the outdoor season with confidence after a strong
outing at the SUNYAC Championships during indoor.
"If I can score those points in indoor, I know I can do better in outdoor," Glymph said.
Jazmin Dunham, a junior hurdler and sprinter, has set the bar high for herself after being named
an All-American in the 60-meter hurdles at indoor nationals.
Dunham hopes to qualify for more than one event at the outdoor championships, as well as earn
All-America honors in those events.
In preparing to do so, the weather is the main obstacle Dunham will have to overcome. The
weather is unpredictable. Athletes will have to prepare themselves to compete in any number of
different weather conditions.
"You have to prepare differently because you have to get used to running outside in the outside
air," Dunham said.
While there is plenty of optimism for the upcoming outdoor season, no predictions will be made
just yet.
"I'd say it's still too early to do any SUNYAC predictions. I mean, our goal is always to be top
half, preferably top three," Dimit said.
The Bengals will open their season Saturday, March 23 at the Emory Invitational in Atlanta, Ga.
They will also compete in Atlanta the following Saturday, March 30, at the Emory Classic.
The first two meets will give Dimit a sense of how prepared the athletes are, as well as what
needs to be done to ensure success later in the season, when it matters more.
"We're excited to see what the athletes can do right off the bat, but the real focus is later in the
season," Dimit said.
