Women split pair of decisions against Stevenson

The women's hockey team split a pair of home games against Stevenson University during
Homecoming last weekend, beating them 6-2 on Friday before dropping a 4-1 decision on Saturday.
Buffalo State took advantage of the fact that many of Stevenson's top players sat out Friday's game,
scoring four goals on special teams.
Courtney Carnes came away with two goals and an assist, leading the Bengals' charge. Jeyna Minnick,
Emily Cornett, Christina Zandri and Kara Goodwin also scored. Minnick also added a pair of assists.
Jordan Lee (19 saves) and Sarah Quigley (nine saves) split time in goal.
For Stevenson, Anastassia Nelson was lit up for six goals, but still managed 23 saves on the night.
Katie Abbott scored both Stevenson goals in the second half of the game.
Saturday's game was a much different story than Friday. The Mustangs came out with a full roster and
made the Bengals work for every puck.
Stevenson's Mackenzie Taggart opened the scoring in the first period during a delayed-penalty,
crashing the net and tipping home a rebound from teammate Karly Vis.
Buffalo State had a few opportunities to tie it up early, but the Mustangs' defense and goalie Sarah
Modzelewski were equal to the task.
The Bengals tied it up late in the first on the power play. Goodwin threw a shot at Modzelewski's pads,
creating a rebound opportunity that Minnick picked up, placing it top corner.
"The puck came to me, and I was standing there and thinking, 'Get it up, Jeyna, just get it up'," Minnick
said of her goal. "Thankfully I did, and it hit the right spot."
After a scoreless second period, the Mustangs broke the tie early in the third.
Megan Alexander capitalized on another rebound after Lee stopped shots by Madison Lange and
Rachel Martell, giving Stevenson a 2-1 lead.
The Bengals played aggressively and even got involved in some shoving after whistles, but were
unable to convert their feisty play into goals.
The game was delayed early in the third due to a power outage. After the lights came back on, Buffalo
State managed to get in front of the net and test Modzelewski a few times, but she handled their shots.
Brooke Webber capitalized on another net-crashing play by the Mustangs midway through the period
to make it 3-1. Sydney Sakwa iced the game with an empty-net goal. The win marked Stevenson's first
as a women's hockey program.
Captain Lauren Mallo said there was a noticeable difference between Friday and Saturday.
"They were a faster team," she said of Saturday's game. "I'd say they were a little more of a cheap team
(Friday) because they couldn't catch us, but today we were a little slower."
Minnick noted that there were some offensive issues for the Bengals Saturday.
"We needed to put two on the puck more often," she said. "We also didn't back-check."
Head coach Robert Burke said there were no surprises after the weekend of play.
"We knew it'd be a tougher lineup (on Saturday)," he said. "There was better quality of play on both
sides of the puck.
"We had a good execution of what we wanted to do. (Modzelewski is) an excellent goalie, but we fed
shots right into her glove and her stomach. We need to shoot smarter when we want to shoot to kill, so
to speak."
Next up for the Bengals is a road trip to Aston, Pa. on Nov. 3 and 4 to play a tough ECAC West
opponent in Neumann University. Neumann placed fifth in the conference a year ago. The Bengals tied
and lost in overtime to them.
"We have to elevate our level of play," Burke said of the upcoming challenge. "(Saturday's game)
helped us do that - it was a better test."
Mallo referenced last year's loss to Neumann as a benchmark.
"We were able to take them into overtime last year," she said. "This year, we're looking to not even
need overtime."
