Ladies fall short in tournament finals

The Buffalo State women's basketball team opened its season by advancing to the
championship of the Betty Abgott Invitational with a win against Alfred Friday before
losing in the title game to Trine on Saturday.
"Overall I thought we played pretty flat," said head coach Sue Roarke. "We didn't play a
full 40 minutes in either game and that's something we'll have to work on as a team."
The Bengals (1-1) cruised past Alfred in 70-48 win. Bianca Smiley led the team with 21
points and 7 rebounds while Ashley Wallace chipped in nine points.
Roarke decided to go with senior Kala Crawford as the starting point guard. She
contributed seven points and six assists.
"It was sort of a feel thing for the most part," Roarke said of the decision to start
Crawford. "It's not a final decision yet, but I'm looking for consistency from the position."
Crawford feels playing point guard is very different than playing the shooting guard
position she manned last year.
"It's definitely a change for me, you know playing the two guard last year off the ball with
Barb (Kiliszek), but I feel that my playmaking and threat as a scorer can only help the
team," she said.
Roarke also mentioned that transfer guard Kelly Kell was a "spark plug" for the team off
the bench. She she scored six points while dishing out five assists and recording four
steals.
After going into halftime with a 34-3 lead, the Bengals went on a 21-3 run to open the
second half. They shot 44 percent for the game while holding Alfred to just 32 percent
from the field.
Heather Herbert led Alfred with 13 points and Emilea Harrison chipped in with 10.
Saturday, Trine used the three-point shot to get past the Bengals in the tournament
championship, prevailing 64-56.
The Thunder shot 36 percent from three-point range (8-22), including seven from Haley
Killingbeck, who led Trine with 21 points on 7-of-14 shooting from downtown.
Killingbeck led a paced attack for a Thunder team that raced out to a 40-21 lead at
halftime on 45 percent shooting from the field.
"We came out with no energy and it was very frustrating," said Smiley, who led the
Bengals with 14 points and eight rebounds and was named to the All-Tournament
Team. "We have to come out with more sense of urgency and that is something this
team must improve on."
Trailing by as many as 25 points, the Bengals went on a 19-2 run to cut the deficit to
six with 1:43 remaining. They cut the lead to five with 18 seconds left, but ultimately fell
short of a comeback.
The Bengals got contributions from their bench as Hillary Kollar had 10 points, while
Crawford, who also received All-Tournament team honors, finished with eight points, six
rebounds and five steals.
Kell was given the start for the Bengals and finished with 2 points, 2 assists and five
turnovers.
"Kell struggled a little going from the bench to starting but for the most part she played
good, smart basketball," Roarke said.
The Bengals will get the weekend off before they travel to D'Youville to take on the
Spartans at 6 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 26.
