Tower 4 to close for updates

Tower 4 is set to undergo aesthetic renovations and infrastructure improvements
this summer, starting as soon as residents leave in May.
Student suites and bathrooms will be updated along with the rest of the building,
and a sprinkler system will be added for the first time.
"The buildings haven't had a major renovation in 40 years," said Kris Kaufman,
director of residence life. "This will be the first time they've been renovated in a long
time."
There was minor work done in spring 2011, when workers replaced outdated
utilities and removed asbestos.
In addition to the installation of wireless Internet throughout the residence hall,
there will also be a replacement of cooking facilities in the tenth-floor lounge area.
The entrance of the building will be constructed as a focal point as well, to help new
students know where to enter the building.
The laundry room will have additional washers and dryers, and one of the
mechanical rooms in the basement will be turned into a lounge area where students
will be able to study and hang out while they do their laundry.
The students' rooms will have smaller desks and built-in closets, essentially giving
them more space in the room, and bathroom renovations will include the addition
of two showers to each suite as well as new tiling. Currently only a fraction of suites
have two showers.
"It's about creating a more comfortable environment for the students to live in,"
said Freddy Sanchez, complex director for Towers 3 and 4. "The maintenance and
upgrades planned will help the residence halls feel less sterile and more like a
home."
Among other major improvements planned are renovations to the entrance, main
lobby, new elevators and resident director apartment updates, Kaufman said. There
will also be energy efficiency and infrastructure improvements that will include
window replacements, complete replacements of all mechanical systems and
electrical and lighting upgrades.
The renovations are set to cost approximately $8.4 million. The construction
budget is about $7.3 million and roughly $1.1 million will go to hazardous materials
abatement.
The building will be closed from May 2012 to July 2013, and is set to reopen in
the summer of 2013. The current residents of Tower 4 will need to seek residence
elsewhere on campus for this period.
Residence Life is currently seeking bids from area hotels and apartment complexes
that facilitate student housing to accommodate those students who are without
housing on campus. The Adam's Mark Hotel will be reopened for students. There
will be a free shuttle bus service running every 20 minutes to help students with
transportation to and from campus.
"Other towers will be taken offline every other year to undergo renovations," said
Tim Ecklund, Associate Vice President for campus life.
