Buffalo State is using the E.H. Butler library to celebrate National Women's History
Month, showcasing 18 women who excelled in science, technology, engineering and
mathematics.

The theme this year is "Women Inspiring Innovation Through Imagination:
Celebrating Women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics." The
exhibit includes biographies as well as photos of the women on display.

Elizabeth Blackwell, the first woman doctor, Susan Solomon, an atmospheric
chemist and leader in climate science and Dian Fossey, a primatologist and
naturalist, are among the women featured in this exhibit.

"Women's History Month is the perfect time to remember the generations of
trailblazing women who inspire all of us to reach for the stars," said Donna Davidoff,
Associate Librarian at Buffalo State College.

Also available are books suited for children and young adults that relate to this
year's theme. Books featuring Marie Curie and Mae Jemison are among others such
as "You Can Be a Woman Engineer" and "The Sky's the Limit: Stories of Discovery by
Women and Girls." These books are put on display to help motivate and inspire kids
and young adults to pursue a career in STEM fields.

"Women are a driving force and they often exceed people's expectations. They
deserve the same treatment as anyone else in society," said Maxwell Pope, a motion
picture science major who expressed interest in the exhibit. "Women's History
month gives our society a means of looking inward in order to reflect the roles they
have played throughout the years."

A campus address will also be presented by the Women and Gender Studies
Program and will feature an open discussion by Dr. Jennifer Jenson, a professor of
education at York University.

The lecture called "Precarious Relations: Gender, Games and Cultural Hegemony"
will be held at 4 p.m. on March 11 in the Bulger Communications Center South. The
talk will include how gaming is influenced by gender and how gender is portrayed in
the video game world.

"A large number of students are involved in gaming to some extent," said Dr.
Jennifer Hunt, associate professor of psychology. "I think that a talk that considers
how gender affects video games as well as the experiences of gamers is perfect for a
Women's History Month talk."

Hunt said that the lecture by Jenson will touch upon how gaming experiences can be
affected by gender.

"People will gain insight into some of the subtle and not-so-subtle ways that gender
affects what we see, how we behave, and how we are treated in contemporary
society," she said. "It should be eye-opening."

The lecture is free and welcome to any member of the campus community
who would be interested. Students involved with gaming or gender studies are
encouraged to attend and discuss the effects each has with each other.

"I think that campus getting involved in women's history month is really important
and positive," said Linda Banfield, a psychology major and women and gender
studies minor. "Women still have ways to go in reaching equality, especially within
the media."

Sydnee Winston, project coordinator at the National Women's History Museum said
that it's important for women to understand their history and know where they
came from because women can gain strength from knowing who their ancestors
were and how they succeeded.

"It is empowering to know history and become inspired by it," Winston said.
"Women's History month creates a greater respect for women."

Hunt said that gender is something that affects the lives of both men and women on
a daily occurrence, even if it's not always recognized.

"Women's History Month gives us the opportunity to recognize important people
and events in our progress toward gender equality, as well as a chance to consider
gender issues that impact us today," she said.
