The African American Student Organizations' Africa Week is in full swing.
The week-long program started with Apollo Night and will host events through
Sunday.
This is the organization's 45th year hosting Africa Week.
Africa Week was created to allow students to learn about the history of African
American culture.
President of AASO, Constance Boakeye, said the week will bring students together
socially and historically.
"Africa Week allows for students to have fun, cheer each other on, and socialize with
their peers," Boakeye said. "We hope everyone takes something out of each event."
Apollo Night, which was held Saturday, was AASO's talent show where the audience
decides the winner. The chosen winner was the dance duo called NLS.
Celebrity guest Cocoa Brown was the host for this year's Apollo Night.
Monday was the event Royalty in Africa and Tuesday was the march partnered with
Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity Inc. to vote at the polls. AASO also streamed the election
in Moore Complex from 10-12 a.m. Tuesday night, along with other organizations
including Fashion Students Association.
FSA President, Fatoumatou Binta Barry, said that although they're a fashion
organization, they don't limit themselves to just fashion-related things.
"It's so important for the student body to be politically conscious," Barry said. "We
hope this broadcast is a step in that direction."
There will be a Family Feud-style game show from 7-9 p.m. today in Butler 210.
An event called, "Whose Dream was More Successful," will take place in Butler 210
from 7-9 p.m. on Thursday. The program, inspired by Martin Luther King Jr., is also
free and open to anyone.
The event Buffalo Night with the theme, "Take Me Back to My Roots," will
happen Friday night with free food and drinks. Guests will learn a little about
African American culture and participate in games and listen to fellow student's
performances.
Students are encouraged to dress in black and white at the Casino Party created in
Bacon 115.
Students can also perform at the event such as singing or reading personal poetry.
No registration beforehand is necessary.
From 6:30-9:30 p.m. Sunday is the AASO fashion show called, "House of Royalty,"
in Rockwell Hall. Tickets for the event are available to purchase at the Box Office in
Rockwell Hall, $10 for BSC students and $12 for the public.
With the theme, "Greek and Chic," the first half of the show will feature Greek-
inspired fashion and the last half will be "Back to Africa."
A free cocktail hour with food and drinks will take place before the show from 5:30-
6:30 p.m. in Rockwell.
Model and actress La'Shontae Heckard will be the celebrity guest at the fashion
show.
"I'm so excited for our week, especially with this being my first time as a part of
AASO's e-board," said Rachelle Figeroux, treasurer for AASO.
