Fowler provides fun, hard work to athletics department

Jim Fowler has worked at Buffalo State for the last 17 years and has made his personal mark on
the campus in that time.
Fowler has coaching experience at the collegiate level - he was the men's hockey coach at
Buffalo State from 1996-2005 and spent five years before that at SUNY Fredonia as an assistant
for the men's team.
Though he is no longer coaching the Bengals, Fowler is still active around the Ice Arena. He has
served as the Ice Arena and Athletics Budget Manager for Buffalo State since 2005.
"The Ice Arena is a day-to-day operation, between the hours of 10 a.m. to 12 midnight," Fowler
said. "I'm in charge of contracts to all leagues, men's, women's, kid's, figure skating, high
school, etcetera, who might rent from us."
Managing the athletics budget can be a tall task, but Fowler handles it to the best of his
abilities.
"Going over the budget is not an option," Fowler said. "I'm in charge of the recruitment
benefits, and what each team gets for a budget and I monitor that to stay within the budget."
Fowler is known for his attention-to-detail and that's why he is successful at working with the
budget.
"Jim does a good job here at Buffalo State, and his strengths show in his abilities to do his job
successfully," Athletic Director Jerry Boyes said. "No issues with the ice at any time. Take pride
in your job, that's what we ask our staff to do."
Fowler has gained the trust and respect of his peers over the years at the university. Boyes
noted the quality of the ice in the Ice Arena is a product of Fowler's hard work.
"Jim is very easy to work with," Boyes said. "Our Ice rink has not aged and has gotten better
over time because of Jim and the pride he has in making sure the ice looks as new as possible."
"Jim works hard at his job, which rubs off on others on the athletic staff at Buffalo State,"
added Tom Koller, sr. associate director of athletics.
As hard as Fowler works at his job, he is also known to have a good sense of humor, making it
easy for colleagues to work with him.
"Good people like Jim make it easier to come to work each day," Koller said.
Fowler's sense of humor translates to having a little fun on the job, as well. It is his enjoyable
personality that sticks out just as much as his work performance.
"Jim taught me how to drive the Zamboni on the ice one day," Koller said. "That was my biggest
memory of my working experience with Fowler."
During Fowler's tenure on staff at Buffalo State, his biggest memory was when the 2011 World
Junior Hockey Championships were held in Buffalo.
"The (world junior) teams practiced at the (Ice) arena," Fowler said. "The experience of those
teams and players here was unforgettable. These players were the future of the NHL, and the
top players under-20 in the world."
Fowler has enjoyed his years at Buffalo State, and is content with his current role.
"Buffalo is home to me," Fowler said. "I never say never (about leaving Buffalo State) but I am
happy where I am now.
"Watching the athletes grow into young men and women, and become successful later in life,
that's what I take the most pride in," Fowler added.
