Campus sexual assault under investigation

The University Police Department is investigating a sexual assault that occurred over the
weekend in an on-campus apartment complex.

According to a safety advisory issued by the college, a female student was the victim
of a sexual assault while attending a party early Saturday morning in Moore complex,
around 1:30 a.m. The victim of the attack was taken to the Erie County Medical Center
for treatment and released.

The UPD has identified a person of interest in the case, according to an update to the
safety advisory, and has questioned the person. Police Chief Peter Carey said that at this
time, it is an on-going investigation.

"We have been in consultation with the District Attorney's office and our
investigation is proceeding at this point," Carey said in an email to The
Record. "We will continue our efforts and analyze evidence reports as they are
received."

According to crime statistics available on the University Police Department's
website, the campus has averaged four to five forcible sexual offenses per year
over the last three years.

Students have received several safety advisories since the beginning of the fall
semester. Over Labor Day weekend, Jabril Muhammad, an 18-year-old freshman
was shot and robbed while walking with friends on Grant Street a few blocks
from campus. A female student was robbed of her purse several hours after
Muhammad was shot on Richmond Avenue, several blocks from campus.

Students also received a safety advisory after two men, who were not Buffalo
State students, were injured in a drive-by shooting near the intersection of Bird
Avenue and Grant Street, several blocks from campus.

Some students on campus worried about their own safety after news of the
attack came out.

"It's kind of scary because I live in Tower Two which is right near there," said
sophomore Madison Bazillo.

Chanil Mejia, a sophomore from the Bronx, worries about the campus
community as a whole.

"I feel like we should promote a safer community with gates or security guards,"
she said. "People should walk through the middle of campus rather than the
outside. I shouldn't have to feel unsafe in my own dorm room."

Students will be made aware of what's happening in the case, Carey said.

"We will keep the campus community informed," he said.

Anyone with information on the incident is urged to contact the UPD at (716)
878-6333.
