UPD, PASO join up for rape defense class

Representatives from the Pan-African Students Organization, Buffalo State's University Police
Department, the Weigel Health Center and various faculty members came together last Friday in
Ketchum Hall to discuss a new program, the Rape Aggression Defense Course.
PASO is working in collaboration with university police and the health center to "educate people
on campus about safety," said Ebenezer Baawuah, PASO president.
The idea for RAD came to Baawuah after his shift at the information center. "I work at the
information center, and sometimes I close around 11, and I've been hearing about people being
attacked," he said, "so we talked to the UPD and they thought it was a good idea."
The main mission of the Pan-African Student Organization is to educate students about Africa,
African Americans, the Caribbean and South America. PASO is trying to incorporate a diverse
agenda advocating for current peer issues, personal issues and professional development. RAD
was just a natural progression, Baawuah said.
The programs two main sponsors are the University Police Department and Violence
Intervention and Victim Advocacy.
The RAD program is part of PASO's "My Buff State, My Home. Be Happy, Be safe" campaign.
This new defense course is a program consisting of realistic self-defense tactics and techniques.
It's a comprehensive course for women, beginning with awareness, prevention, risk reduction
and avoidance, while progressing on to the basics of hands-on defense training. The course is
taught by certified RAD instructors and provides a reference manual. The manual outlines the
entire defense program for reference and continuous personal growth, according to New York
State University Police, who administer the program.
The course began on Monday night, and runs until Thursday, Nov. 15, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.
The 12 hours include practical application of techniques learned in the course. It runs four days,
for three hours each day in Campus West and will be free to Buffalo State students, $10 for
faculty and staff, and $20 for non Buffalo State affiliated participants. Class size is limited to 20
students and payment is due at the first meeting.
"The class is nine hours without simulation," said Raven Harvey, a university police officer
and RAD instructor. "The goal is to offer it once a month, but we're willing to do a smaller
program."
Registration for RAD is required to attend. Request forms can be obtained and returned to the
University Police Department, located in Chase Hall 110. Additional questions or information
about the program can be directed towards UPD officers Raven Harvey and Richard Myers or
Elizabeth McGough, coordinator and case manager for VIVA.
