The National Society of Black Engineers will host the third annual Silent Library on
Friday Oct. 12 in the basement of Perry Hall.
The event, Silent Library, started a few years ago by previous E-board members. Its
inspiration stemmed from the MTV hit television show called "Silent Library."
Cynthia Duncan, the chair director of professional development association of NSBE,
said she looks forward to this event every year.
"This is a program we created two semesters ago during relaxation week," Duncan
said. "It gives students the opportunity to step away from college stress, get together
with friends, and participate in an enjoyable night to relax, laugh, cry and interact
with other people."
The President of NSBE, Victor Rivera, said he is anticipating a great turn out at this
event.
"We continue to hold this event in hopes of bringing non-members in to mingle with
us and see what were all about," Rivera said.
Members of a team will go through a series of challenges all while staying as quiet as
possible, such as being tickled or having to eat some bizarre food.
On the MTV version, their sound levels are measured and if during the event
laughing or talking gets too loud and exceeds the sound limit set for the specific
challenge, the participants lose money.
Judges who are part of NSBE will determine if the team will win the challenge or not
based on the noise they make.
The challenges that students will go through will be less extreme than the ones
featured on the MTV.
"The challenges will be toned down but will still be just as outrageous," Rivera said.
There are also plans to have surprise guest of NSBE's choosing to come in and
participate in the event.
It's a free event open to everyone who wants to participate and refreshments will be
offered to those who attend.
Students are asked to create teams of six people, but people who show up without
a team will be allowed to jump in with another team. As this event is always
entertaining, students are still welcome to come watch if they don't want to
participate.
According to Vice President of NSBE, Joseph Gary, one of the most positive aspects
students will walk away with after Silent Library is courage.
"Students will build up their courage to win huge challenges that they may think
they would never win," Gary said.
Currently it's an annual event happening every fall semester, but if the turn out this
year is good it may be added to the spring semester as well Rivera said.
Silent Library is funded through NSBE's budget through USG and students get to
participate free through their mandatory student activity fee.
NSBE's general interest meetings are 3:45 p.m. Friday nights in Caudell Hall 219.
The NSBE is an international organization that was founded in 1975 at Purdue
University. They are the Region 1 area chapter and were founded in 1988 at Buffalo
State College by Shomari A. James.
According to NSBE's website its sole purpose is "to increase the number of culturally
responsible Black Engineers who excel academically, succeed professionally, and
positively impact the community."
"The title might be named "black engineers" but don't let that title stop you from
joining or checking us out," Rivera said. "This organization benefits everybody."
