Handful of school records fall in opening outdoor meets

The Buffalo State men's and women's track and field teams broke five school records in their first two meets of the outdoor season in Atlanta, Ga. the last two weekends.
They broke three at the Emory Invitational March 22 and 23 and two others at the Emory
Classic March 29 and 30.
The Bengals started their outdoor campaign with strong performances at both meets,
earning a combined nine first-place finishes, with several other athletes placing high in
their events.
"This was probably the best opening trip we've had in the history of Buffalo State
College for track and field," assistant coach Markus Allen said.
"We had a great trip overall, a lot of great performances and a lot of people winning
events," assistant coach Dustin Dimit added.
At the Emory Classic last weekend, Jordan Fuentes, a senior thrower, broke a 32-year-old
school record, winning the shot put with a throw of 15.49 meters. The previous record of
15.44 meters was set by Mike Johnson in 1981.
Starting the outdoor season with a big, record-breaking throw was a confidence builder
for Fuentes.
"It feels great," he said. "It shows that I've been training really hard and my training is
finally paying off."
Fuentes also earned a first-place finish in the discus (45.96m).
For his efforts, Fuentes was named the SUNYAC Men's Field Athlete of the Week. He
spent the entire indoor season training, as he was only eligible for the outdoor season.
"Jordan's been hungry all winter," Dimit said.
Sophomore jumper Rich Pete also had a first-place finish at the meet, winning the long
jump with a distance of 6.80 meters. Pete was also third in the triple jump (13.21m).
Bumkoth Jiak chipped in with a second-place finish in the 1,500-meter run with a time of
3:56.30, setting a school record. He also finished second in the 800-meter run (1:52.88).
On the women's side, junior Jazmin Dunham and senior Sasha Henry continued their
dominance from the indoor season at the Classic.
The duo teamed up with Patrice Johnson and Shuntone Pricher to win the 4x100-meter
relay, crossing the finish line in 47.01 seconds.
Individually, Dunham also earned first in the 100-meter hurdles (14.42) and second in the
200-meter dash (24.98).
Tara Murphy, a junior mid-distance runner, crossed the finish line first in the 800-meter
run (2:18.94) to round out the top-finishes of last weekend.
The Bengals also performed well at the Emory Invitational, their inaugural meet of the
outdoor season.
Sophomore mid-distance runner Alex Ngabo broke the school record in the 5,000-meter
run, as he placed fourth in the event (15:23.36).
Fuentes won the discus at the meet with a toss of 49.23 meters, breaking his own record set last year.
Pete had a good showing, as well, winning the long jump and triple jump with leaps of
6.84 meters and 14.11 meters, respectively.
Dunham and Henry again led the women. They were joined by Murphy and freshman
Sasa Vann in the 4x400-meter relay, as they set a school record in the event. Their time
of 3:57.15 earned second place.
While the teams have performed at a high level, it was a bit unexpected this early in the
season.
"We always expect big things but the times that early are probably a little ahead of
schedule," Dimit said.
Moving forward, Dimit said the athletes have to stay hungry and continue their hard
work. Though several athletes earned top-10 finishes, they cannot sit back and watch
their competitors pass them by.
"They know that everybody is trying to take them down so they have to work just as hard
or harder, to keep that position," Dimit said.
The Bengals will next compete Saturday, April 6, at Nazareth College in Rochester.
Most, if not all the athletes who performed in Atlanta, will not compete at Nazareth.
A number of athletes, including Dunham and Henry, haven't had adequate rest since the
indoor season ended. This weekend will be an opportunity for those athletes to recuperate
and get their mindset focused on the rest of the season.
With several of the top athletes taking a rest, this weekend presents an opportunity for
other athletes to show the coaches what they are capable of.
"This is the time where our younger kids, kids that haven't gotten opportunities like that,
get their chance," Allen said.
