In celebration of 100 years of service to Buffalo State, The Record will re-print
one former article in each of its 10 issues this semester, chronicling the paper's
rich history since its establishment in 1913. This week, we feature an article that
appeared in Vol. 80, Issue No. 25 published on Friday, Feb. 18, 1977.
Thirty-six years ago, a record blizzard swept through Western New York from
Jan. 28 to Feb. 1. Combining with winds up to 60 miles per hour, the "Blizzard
of '77", which it came to be called, left Buffalo buried under snowdrifts as high as
15-20 feet, closing businesses and stranding thousand for weeks. The Record's
extensive coverage of the storm concluded with a report titled, "Storm days force
class extension to May 26," written by staff reporter Darcy Leslie, after the College
announced it would extend the semester two weeks to make up for class time lost
due to the blizzard.

Classes will be extended to May 26, 1977, as a result of the recent blizzard,
Dr. E.K. Fretwell, President of Buffalo State has announced.
Spring recess has been left untouched but the Feb. 21 holiday has been
eliminated. Commencement has been rescheduled for May 27, 1977, Dr. Fretwell
said.
The blizzard, which virtually buried Western New York, gave Buffalo State
students a 10-day holiday from Jan. 27 to Feb. 6.
The decision was reached by Fretwell after requesting Dr. Barbara Frey, Vice
President of Academic Affairs, to form a recommendation for calendar modifications.
Frey "did the footwork" in forming the proposal, Heidi Mahoney, assistant to
the president, said. She checked with other administrators. Student representatives
and the SUNY Central Office to get their recommendations, Mahoney said. Frey
found "a need for students and faculty to retain their spring recess" Mahoney said.
She tried to keep "a consistency with other schools and universities in the area,"
especially the University of Buffalo where many Buffalo State students are cross
registered
Within a school year in the SUNY system there must be 150 class days. The
present spring semester must have 79 class days and the revisions are designed to
help reach this quota, Mahoney said.
These modifications were presented at the All-College meeting on Feb. 17 by
Frey at the request of Fretwell.
The proposals were then forwarded to Fretwell who approved them over the
weekend.
Faculty members are urged by Frey to "play with students for long range
assignments and independent activites" should Buffalo be the victim of another
major "white-out," Fretwell said.
