Campus literary magazine to hold first release party

If you've ever ventured outside campus, you'll know that Buffalo State is on the fringe of one of the
trendiest neighborhoods within the city limits. One organization on campus aims to take that mellow
vibe and reproduce it, this time within the walls of the Campbell Student Union.
Buff State's student-produced literary magazine, The Lens, will hold its first release party of the
semester from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the union's Social Hall.
This will be the debut of The Lens's new look as well.
"The layout has expanded," said Evan Duckett, vice president and creative director of the organization.
"We've moved up from a smaller size to a full size magazine format. It's pretty exciting."
The Lens is a self-described art, literary and culture magazine. Founded in 2010, it is dedicated to
publishing literature, drawings, photographs and graphics. Its membership has grown considerably in
its nearly three years of existence. According to the organization's Bengal Connect page, there are 32
registered members, and Duckett and secretary Gabriela Valette agree that the numbers are only getting
bigger.
"There are times where we're viewed as an underdog magazine," said Valette, a sophomore public
communication major with a minor in hospitality and tourism. "But every time I explain to someone
who's unaware of who we are, they (want to get involved). That's one of my favorite things about being
part of this magazine."
Also on the rise is the quality and number of submissions the magazine is receiving.
"The quality of the work is amazing. We have so many talented individuals on campus just waiting
to be discovered," Duckett said. "We are constantly receiving submissions and inquiries as to how to
(join) the staff."
That should mean a chock-full couple of issues, as The Lens only prints twice per semester. It holds a
release party for every issue, hence the event on Wednesday, which promises live poetry and music in
a relaxing setting. The staff hopes the event will evoke images of some of Elmwood's hip coffee places,
including Spot and Dolci.
"The first event this semester will have a real chill poetry cafe vibe, (and is) fully catered by our
wonderful Dining Services," Duckett said.
If you can't make it to the release party, you can always find issues of The Lens at the information
center in the union, but Valette stressed the importance of participating in the actual event.
"We want to throw the release party to make sure students know when it's out," she said. "It's good to
lay them out throughout the school and use social networks, but having an actual social event makes
the connection between the readers, the e-board, and even the artist more personal... and provides a
chance to maybe even perform - and who doesn't enjoy a good time on the stage?"
From there, The Lens will be giving out free hot chocolate on Thursday during Bengal Pause and
providing students with opportunities to get involved with the magazine.
