USG Academic Affairs to help students learn and grow

All students will have the chance to interact with one another and develop essential skills needed
for the real world at the Academic Mix & Mingle, which will take place from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Wednesday in Butler 210.
The event, hosted by the United States Government Academic Affairs Committee, will provide
students with networking opportunities and information on academic support services on
campus, as well as scholarship and study abroad opportunities.
The Career Development Center is one of the departments providing information at the event.
Director Stephanie Zuckerman-Aviles said that the mixer is a great opportunity for students to
progress in their careers.
"This event is a great way to bring student organizations together," Zuckerman-Aviles said.
"These organizations are the heart and soul of Buffalo State, and members are at an advantage
because employers like to see students are committed. Students can grow, learn and become
engaged in the college by being a part of these groups."
This is the second mixer of the school year, and Daisy Rochez, the Administrative Vice
President for USG Academic Affairs, said last semester's event was successful, with a good
turnout and positive feedback. This semester's mixer is different - it's more interactive and less
formal.
"(This mixer will focus) more on the interactive component, so there will be interactive games
in order to acquaint the student body with other organizations, not just academic ones," said
Rochez. "There will also be a myriad of chances for students to win prizes."
Associate Vice President and Dean of Students Dr. Charles Kenyon said that events similar to
the mixer are good opportunities for students to get involved with the Buffalo State community.
"I encourage students, especially commuters, to attend the USG Academic Mix and Mingle
event," Kenyon said. "This will be a great opportunity to learn about programs, services, clubs
and organizations for students to get involved with. You will also get to meet new people and
find others who share your same interests. All this at one big event. It should be a great time."
Muhammed Sumbundu, a College Council member, said that while everyone is invited to the
mixer, one benefit of attending this event is that it counts as one of the mandatory three events
that members of organizations funded by USG need to attend.
"The academic mixer is an opportunity for organizations on campus to be able to collaborate and
share ideas for future programming," Sumbundu said. "The event is an exciting, vibrant, as well
as educational activity where students and organization participants can have fun, while learning
about the wonderful academic opportunities on campus."
Rochez said that events like the mixer are a good chance for students to get more involved,
meet people, and make the most of the endless opportunities that are available. Since these
events are for the students, they should take advantage of them. She added that since everyone
in attendance is a future leader, they all will be able to make the most of the information and
opportunities provided for them at the mixer.
"Everyone's a leader," said Rochez. "You're getting a degree and changing the world."
