It's beginning to sound a lot like Christmas

This time of year is usually a great time to be in Buffalo.
The first few snow flurries, hot chocolate cravings, and Christmas decorations going up in stores all
contribute to a holiday spirit that have some Grinches moaning.
After working in retail for five years, one starts to get the idea that people generally do not like to hear
Christmas music in stores this early. For some reason, they feel unprepared for the season, as if they
need to start shopping and baking for Christmas once the music starts playing.
The commercial preparations for the holiday season get pushed on us earlier each year. Next week
Black Friday will no longer start Friday, as some retailers are opening their doors and offering deals
Thanksgiving Day. This type of paranoia can be irritating.
However, I wish people could learn to enjoy the music. Since we've turned the holiday season into one
big commercial event anyways, why not let Christmas music play a little early? Maybe it will give us a
little extra time to actually listen and enjoy it.
Being one of the youngest of a large family, Christmas was always a special time for me. Early Christmas
music evokes those bittersweet memories of "the good old days," when my whole family was home and
celebrating together.
Snowball fights, shopping trips to Viddlers and Christmas tree decorating are just a few of the former
family traditions that I fondly remember with every carol I hear. I miss those days terribly, but at least I
can enjoy the memory of them through music and decorations.
I realize that not all holiday memories may be pleasant, such as long lines in stores, not getting a
particular present you wanted or mall Santas.
Even some good memories may not evoke the happiest emotions. For many students, it may only cause
homesickness and distract them from finishing the semester strong.
While it may be too early for students to start decorating or shopping, I don't think it is too early to
enjoy the inevitable Christmas music.
With Thanksgiving a week away, the season is already upon us. The retail trees have been decorated,
Lifetime and Hallmark have started their competition for the world's corniest holiday special and the
music is playing full-time on some Buffalo radio stations.
Students should enjoy the season while it's here because the holidays fly by faster than summer break.
Instead of aimlessly complaining about it, why not sing along and remember the good times at home?
We need fewer Scrooges and Grinches in this world anyway.
