The men's hockey team split a pair of games this weekend, defeating Morrisville State, 3-2,
before losing to Division I Penn State, 4-2.
Buffalo State (2-1-1, 1-1-1 SUNYAC) started the weekend with a 28-save performance from
junior goaltender Kevin Carr in a slim victory over Morrisville (0-4).
"It was a good win for us," Carr said. "It wasn't pretty, but it was good to get back on track."
Freshman Ryan Salkeld led the scoring in the first, and captain Mike Zannella and junior Shane
Avery scored 17 seconds apart to put the Bengals up by three early in the second period.
However, Morrisville battled back to reduce the deficit to 3-2.
With goaltender Christopher Azzano pulled for the extra attacker late in the third, Morrisville
put on the pressure, but James Jarvis took a checking from behind penalty with 30 seconds left,
essentially sealing the win for the Bengals.
The Bengals held on for the win, but would suffer a tough loss the following night against Penn
State.
"They technically weren't supposed to lose to us on paper," Carr said, referring to the Bengals'
season-opening win over Penn State.
"I'm sure they weren't too happy losing to us," Zannella said. "I'm sure they had something to
prove."
Carr made 45 saves, including 19 in the first period, but the Nittany Lions sent Buffalo State
home with its second loss of the season.
Senior Matt Bessing gave the Bengals an early lead with his first goal of the season, but Penn
State tied the game later in the first period.
The Nittany Lions added a pair of goals in the second, taking a 3-1 lead into the intermission.
"Overall, we had a couple lapses lead to a couple goals," Melligan said. "We have to stick to our
system."
Zannella brought the Bengals within one, but David Glen added an insurance goal for Penn
State, putting them up 4-2 for good.
The Bengals were outshot 49-25 on the night.
"We didn't really play to our potential, but we have to try and get better every game," said
Zannella.
Buffalo State's next opponent will be Plattsburgh, the team that knocked the Bengals out of the
SUNYAC semifinals in triple overtime to end last season.
"We don't forget about last year," Zannella said. "That was probably the worst 24 hours of
my life. There's definitely revenge, but we're looking for two points against [Plattsburgh] and
Potsdam. That's what's most important."
The Cardinals are off to a 2-0 start this season, and have scored 12 goals in their only two games
this year.
"Everyone remembers the triple overtime loss and we're still pretty upset about it," Carr
said. "We definitely don't forget it."
The Bengals' next game will be at 7 p.m. Friday in Plattsburgh, followed by a 7 p.m. faceoff
Saturday in Potsdam.
