Bengals drop pair of conference games to Neumann University

The Buffalo State women's hockey team dropped a pair of road conference games to rival
Neumann University last weekend, losing 2-1 Saturday and 5-2 Sunday.
In Saturday's contest, despite playing a fairly even game with the Knights in terms of shots and
penalties, the Bengals came up short.
After Neumann's Donna Williams opened the scoring in the first period, freshman defender
Nikki Kirchberger took advantage of a 5-on-3 power play, tying the score with her first
collegiate goal.
"My defensive partner, Lauren Mallo, passed it over to me and it was just a quick-release kind of
goal," Kirchberger said. "It was a tying goal and a really good team effort, so it felt awesome."
Edie Brenning scored her first of the year to give the Knights the lead in the second period. From
there, the defense and goaltender Shannon Donnelly (20 saves) secured the win for Neumann.
Jordan Lee made 20 saves for Buffalo State in her second straight loss.
The Bengals (1-3, 0-2 ECAC) attempted to rebound on Sunday, playing a faster, up-tempo game.
Neumann jumped out to a lead in the first period on a goal by Lynsey Nakamura. Buffalo State's
Christina Zandri tied it on the power play in the second period, but Neumann broke away and
scored three unanswered goals, including one in the last two seconds of play in the middle frame.
"We liked the pace of the game (on Sunday), but our problem was that we took a couple too
many risks in the neutral zone that led to odd-man rushes," head coach Rob Burke said. "The
goal that made it 4-1 was what really killed us - there was a mad scramble down low and the
puck just found its way in along the side.
"If it'd been 3-1, it would have only taken one goal to get us back in it, but obviously once it
becomes 4-1, it's a steeper hill to climb. Neumann was no better than us, but when you feel like
you're outplaying a team and you give up chances like that, it's discouraging."
Jordan Lee got the start again for Buffalo State, allowing four goals on 15 shots. She was
replaced by freshman goalie Sarah Quigley in the third period. Quigley fared well, allowing one
goal on seven shots.
"We kind of fell apart and couldn't get it back together," Lee said of the team's play. "We needed
someone else in net to try and improve our play."
The Bengals did outplay the Knights in the third period of Sunday's game, firing 20 shots at
Donnelly as opposed to Neumann's seven at Quigley. However, the deficit proved too much for
Buffalo State.
Melissa Ash added a late power-play marker to make it 5-2.
"That power-play opportunity was good - (it conveyed) a real sense of urgency," Burke
said. "We preached an aggressive approach, and the kids answered the challenge really well. We
need to play the full 60 minutes of the game like the last five."
Neumann played a tougher, faster and more physical game, which is something Burke
anticipated.
"We actually adjusted our lineup prior to this weekend because we needed more speed, and we
were faster because of those changes," he said.
Kirchberger said she enjoyed the physical tone of both games.
"They played a strong game and they're big, but in no way were we intimidated," she said.
The Bengals will look to come back from the weekend's frustrations with another road trip this
weekend, as they take on conference rival Chatham Nov. 10 and 11.
The Cougars have an identical record to Buffalo State and are coming off a 10-0 blowout loss to
Plattsburgh. Lee doesn't take that as a sure sign of winning, however.
"It doesn't really matter who we play. We need to focus on ourselves, and on mentally preparing
and focusing on what needs to get done," she said.
