Probably one of the worst instructors I've ever had in college, even though he is very intelligent. It seemed as though he always came to class unprepared and just jumps around from topic to topic. Also can be very rude: I tried to ask him a question after class and he told me he couldn't talk to me because he had to speak to another student.
prof. Derne may be eccentric and somewhat weird, but he's a great guy and loves the material he teaches. Class attendance is pretty mandatory- he grades participation (simple if you come to class) and the notes from him make the class impartially simple. Put in the effort and you will do well.
Two years out of Geneseo, and Derne's courses and the material taught in them is some of the only information i retained. His bizarre teaching style really engrains information in your head, and his personality makes it fun! don't take yourself too seriously, and youll do wonderful in these courses.
Makes the classical theorists very simple to understand. Yes he is eccentric but after you get use to it it helps you stay focused in class. I had a big class so take home mid year exams were simple. Go to his office for help on the paper or you will get a bad grade. Just pay attention and take notes! He reviews everything before exams that you need to know
When I came to Derne for help during his office hours, he told me that I'd never been taught how to write because I have a strong personality. That's rude, and it's garbage; I earned two fives on my AP English exams. The worst part was that I really was willing to take direction from him...he didn't seem to be willing to give it, though.
Okay, so he does really random things--but I guess he just really likes hula and horseback riding. He actually is really friendly, but you do have to write what he wants you to write. The thing is, I always had a fun time in his class and I legitimately LEARNED a lot.
His antics are sometimes entertaining...but often annoying. If you enjoy writing papers that regurgitate verbatim what he already told you in class you'll be fine. Not much room for your own ideas and his grading is unpredictable and unclear.
I learned nothing from this class. When people describe him as "out there" they are not lying. If you try to go to him for help, he will rewrite your paper the way HE thinks it should be...if you agree with everything he says in class you will be ok. He is the most demeaning prof. I have ever had in my college experience. Avoid at all cost.
His courses are simple as long as you attend, participate, and write papers early. If you go to him with a finished paper, he literally rips it apart and prints you out a sheet to help re-write it. I went from getting a 78 on my first paper to a 98 and 100. He also repeats everything to make sure you understand. Participation required but not difficult |
