Tech building on track for fall

Students will soon have access to the facilities in the new technology building, as the
project will be completed in the summer.
Located behind the Weigel Health Center, the new building will soon be home to the
Fashion and Textile Technology Department, the Engineering Technology Department
and the Computer Information Systems Department.
The construction cost is approximately $24 million with the design costing $2.5 million,
according to Steven Shaffer, manager of design and construction.
Shaffer said the design process began in the summer of 2008. Once funding was
secured, construction began in May of 2011.
"While the exterior shell of the building is almost complete, much work continues at a
fast pace on the interior, including work on electrical and mechanical systems and finish
work such as ceilings, flooring and painting," Shaffer said.
Debra Hurley, an assistant design and construction coordinator, said two older campus
buildings were demolished to make way for the new building.
The former buildings were Buffalo Psychiatric Center and the laundry and bakery
buildings. The new building is approximately 87,000 square feet, and will contain
classrooms, labs and offices for all of the departments occupying the building.
"There will also be a 60-seat lecture hall, a 36-seat smart classroom, two 24-seat smart
classrooms and a food service area," Hurley said.
Dr. William Lin, chair and associate professor for the computer information systems
department, said each floor will be designated to one of the three departments that will
occupy the building. The Engineering Technology Department will occupy the first floor,
the Computer Information Systems Department will occupy the second floor, and the
third floor will be occupied by the Fashion and Textile Technology Department.
Lin said each floor will have attractive spaces for relaxation and quiet study as well as
specialized labs. Brand new computers will also be installed.
"The physical move from here to there will take place around June," Lin said.
Lin said most of the classes hosted in the new building will be computer information
systems classes.
"The scheduling is being finalized," he said. "Registration will start soon and students
will be registering for classes in the new building."
According to a press release, the building is designed to Leadership in Energy and
Environmental Design standards and is rated for LEED silver certification. The building
will have a vegetated lower roof area and a photovoltaic collector on its upper roof. This
will make the building more environmentally friendly.
"It's a very exciting project," said Lin "It's nice to see it come to conclusion."
