Dimit pleased with Bengals' performance against Division I programs

The Buffalo State men's and women's cross country teams sized up with some of the nation's
top athletes Saturday, proving to be a formidable Division III program in the process.
The Greater Louisville Cross Country Classic, held at the University of Louisville, featured dozens
of Division I programs from across the nation. Regardless, coach Dustin Dimit felt the teams
accomplished what they set out to do.
"We just wanted to go out and beat some Division I teams, and again learn how to race in the
large race atmosphere - let them push us to fast times and when we did that we were the
second overall Division III team there," Dimit said of his team's performance.
Freshman Alex Ngabo was the men's top finisher, placing 73rd of 362 runners (26:07). Fellow
freshman Bumkoth Jiak was right behind Ngabo, crossing 75th (26:09).
The two freshmen have had an ongoing friendly rivalry all season, and Ngabo finally gained
some bragging rights.
"I am so happy that this time I was able to be in front of (Jiak) for the first time," Ngabo said. "I
feel that I should be able to beat him right now, that's where I should be."
The men ended up finishing 29th among the 46 teams that participated.
The women fared better than the men in terms of results, as they placed fourth of 42 teams.
Sophomore co-captain Sabrina Brooks had the top finish on the women's side, earning 30th
of 339 competitors in the 5K (20:03). Sophomore Rachel Parker also contributed highly to the
team scoring, placing 45th in the 5K (20:21).
Brooks leads a group of young runners who are consistently improving as a unit every single
meet.
"The other captain and I are really happy how everything is turning out - everyone is really
bunched up together, so everyone's times should continue to improve," Brooks said. "We
should be a lot better than we were last year."
Dimit noted that he was especially happy with the girl's performance.
Dimit is proud of his young teams and thinks that as a whole they are going in the right
direction after competing in such a large race with over a dozen nationally-ranked Division I
teams.
"The people that we had that didn't run as well as we would have liked learned from running
in such a large race," Dimit said. "It helps us prepare for regionals later in the year where there
will be 50 teams in a race. It's a different philosophy on how you have to race compared to a
smaller race like SUNYACS."
Dimit also saw the race as a way to promote the continuing growth of the program.
"It was kind of just going out and showing how far the program has come in the last few years."
The teams will travel to Oberlin College (OH) on Oct. 13 for their next meet. It will be the teams'
final tune-up before the SUNYAC Championships.
