Ladies split home tri-match, prepare for pool play

Playing in just its second and third home matches of the season Saturday, the Buffalo State women's
volleyball team played to straight sets both matches, winning one and dropping the other.

"It was weird to play at home, to be honest," head coach Maria DePeters said. "We haven't been (home)
in over a month, so it was really nice to be on our own court and our own facility."

The Bengals (19-6, 3-0 SUNYAC) lost to Daemen in the first of a tri-match at the Sports Arena, 28-26, 25-
23 and 25-9. Senior Sherrell McLean and sophomore Sam Parente had a team-high eight kills each, while
junior Kelsey Bashore contributed 28 assists and 15 digs. Junior libero Chelsea Moore chipped in 26 digs.

DePeters noted that her team was in position to win a couple of the games, but they did not capitalize
on all of their opportunities and were not fully-prepared mentally.

"It was just inconsistency with mental toughness," DePeters said. "We did really, really well the first
two sets, and we should've pulled them off, and there was a couple calls that did go our way, and just
couldn't pull it out. And then the third set, it just came down to mental toughness again."

The Wildcats presented a tough matchup for Buffalo State. They also defeated the Bengals on Oct. 2.
Daemen is in transition to become a Division II program and DePeters welcomes the stiff competition.

"(Daemen) is a transitional Division II team, where they have a lot of girls on scholarship, so it is a
very tough team," DePeters said. "And it is hard to have them on our schedule twice, but it's a great
opportunity for us to play a really good team, especially at the end of the season going into SUNYAC
finals and conference play."

Before the Bengals played the third team featured in the tri-match, St. John Fisher, DePeters talked with
her team to aid them in minimizing the mental errors that proved costly in the early match.

"We just had a big talk on consistency and mental toughness, and different things that (they) can do as
athletes on the floor when something's not going our way, how to make it better," DePeters said. "So I
say, 'If something's going wrong with your game, then really focus on something that you're doing really
well. You know, focus on your blocking if you're hitting's not on, so you are making an impact on the
team.'

"It was just little things like that, and they obviously showed that (against Fisher) they were mentally
consistent."

The Bengals apparently took that advice, cruising to a straight-set victory against the Cardinals, 25-10,
25-18 and 25-16.

Bashore set the tone from the beginning for Buffalo State, serving two aces to start the match. Bashore
said her "jump float" serve - which minimizes spin on the ball to make the direction of it unpredictable
- was working well throughout the match.

"(My serves) were hard, and I know jump-floats are always hard to adjust to, so it just takes a little bit
of practice," said Bashore, who finished with 13 kills. "If they're not used to it, then they usually work
pretty well."

Freshman Hannah Santoro helped pace the offense with 11 kills, while Parente added nine. Moore had
18 digs.

The Bengals also finished their games strong against the Cardinals. They scored 13 of the last 17 points
to take the first game, and in the second game with the score tied at 13, they went on a 12-5 run to halt
a Cardinal rally.

McLean expressed that closing out games was a bit of a problem early in the season, but not so much
now.

"I think that really (was) a struggle with us in the beginning of the season, so we're doing a really good
job as to finishing out games now," McLean said.

Bashore agreed that the Bengals are finishing games like they should be. She said overcoming mistakes
and making good plays down the stretch has given the team the emotional lift needed to win games.

"Every so often when you get a really nice kill, it just kind of picks everybody up and you get excited all
over again," Bashore said. "So I think just making sure if you made a mistake that you come back with a
nice kill or a nice pass."

The Bengals play at 7 p.m. today at Medaille before their second and final SUNYAC pool play matches
take place Friday and Saturday at Fredonia. Their three matches will decide their seed in the conference
playoffs.

Buffalo State currently holds first place in the SUNYAC West Division by one game over Fredonia. The
first-place seed earns the right to host playoffs.

"(We're) very confident," McLean said. "We're just going in not cocky, but we really want to be first in
the SUNYAC and host playoffs. That's our goal."

The Bengals kick off pool play at 6 p.m. on Friday with an important match against Fredonia. They play
next at 11 a.m. on Saturday against Oswego, followed by a 1 p.m. match against Brockport.
