Choir seeks true S.P.I.R.I.T.

S.P.I.R.I.T Gospel Choir is giving its members and fellow students a chance to relax, unite and
explore Christianity with its semester-ending week of events.
Monday's event, "Hit That," focused on breaking down Christian stereotypes. A beach ball
filled with topics was thrown around the room, and members talked about whichever topic was
chosen.
The discussion on Tuesday, titled "Bible, Sex and this Generation," ran from 8 to 10 p.m. in
Bulger East 2. Participants discussed what they and the Bible believe about sex and relationships.
"I guess sometimes people think that Christians are really strict and don't do anything fun," said
S.P.I.R.I.T secretary April Baptiste Brown. "We're just like anyone else."
The choir members are not rigid and uptight, but spiritual and family oriented. They see
themselves as a family and try to keep people connected, whether they are in S.P.I.R.I.T or not.
Although members perform at events and may sing when walking around campus, the group is
showing the Buffalo State community that they are more than just a choir.
"We want to sit back and have fun; expand on what spirit is to us," said Shatie Brown, minister
of music for S.P.I.R.I.T. "We don't always sing; we don't always talk about Jesus Christ."
The choir will be hosting a Pancake Dinner from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday in Moore Lounge. It
will showcase the culinary talents of Shatie Brown, who wanted to organize and prepare food for
the dinner because he says he can make tasty pancakes the size of people's heads.
"That's my specialty," Brown said. "I call them mancakes."
The "American Bible Challenge" will take place from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursdy in Game Room 105
H. Based on the popular GSN game show, participants will be split into groups to compete.
Challenges will include multiple-choice questions, placing events in order and deciphering what
books certain biblical events come from. The winning team will score $10 Target gift cards.
Friday's Battle of the Sections is the only singing-centered event of S.P.I.R.I.T Week. It will
take place from 6 to 8 p.m. in Bulger North, and will showcase the talents of the Soprano, Alto
and Tenor sections. Members are encouraging people to come out to watch and even sing along.
Baptiste Brown knows that the competitive nature of S.P.I.R.I.T will be evident to viewers and
will make for a good show.
"We all come together to create one voice," Brown said.
S.P.I.R.I.T Week wraps up on Saturday with Recess Day from 3 to 5 p.m. Those interested in
participating in the friendly competition will meet in front of Rockwell Hall and walk over to
Delaware Park to play various games.
"(The entire week) is just (the) icing on the cake for a great semester," Baptiste Brown said.
S.P.I.R.I.T will have a farewell banquet on Sunday for its senior members, aptly titled "The Last
Supper."
Choir President Marcus Samerson is looking forward to giving his farewell speech. He will
graduate with a double major in technology education and electrical engineering technology.
With this likely being the last S.P.I.R.I.T Week that he and the other seniors will take part of, he
hopes everybody will take one main thing away from it all.
"The main goal is to sit back and enjoy the lessons of God," Samerson said.
S.P.I.R.I.T is a Christian organization, but their programs transcend religious boundaries. They
try to focus on the things that bring us all together.
Those of other faiths and views are welcome to join in the week's events, as members hope to
simultaneously educate and learn. Judgment is absent and seen as hypocritical.
"We would hope to change the way people look at Christians," Baptiste Brown said. "Who are
we to do any different than He did?"
