Unbeaten streak runs to eight

The Buffalo State women's soccer team improved its unbeaten streak to eight games over
the weekend, defeating Potsdam 4-1 on Friday and playing Plattsburgh to a scoreless
draw on Saturday.

The Bengals (4-6-5 overall/2-1-4 SUNYAC) have not dropped a game since losing to
Brockport on Sept. 21. Following the weekend road trip, they are tied with Geneseo for
the sixth and final playoff spot.

Buffalo State dominated play against Potsdam. The Bengals fell behind early, conceding
a goal in the eighth minute, but head coach Nick DeMarsh said he felt his team was in
complete control from the opening kick.

"We had one minor moment of calamity in the back," DeMarsh said. "An individual error
cost us on one of our only shots allowed, but it wasn't a worry. Even when (Potsdam)
went up they didn't have a chance."

Goalkeeper Linda Banfield said she was a little more concerned after giving up the early
goal.

"I was a little worried because coach (DeMarsh) said Potsdam was a 'banana peel' team,"

Banfield said. "It was a game that we could slip up and lose. But that goal was just a
minor slip up."

Freshman midfielder Kristin Seiferth equalized right away, scoring in the 12th minute on
a cross by Katie Hennes.

The Bengals took the lead two minutes later when forward Taylor Volkman scored in the
14th minute. Co-captain center midfielder Shannon Yokopovich was credited with the
assist.

Shortly after having a goal nullified by a controversial foul, sophomore Meghan Allen
scored unassisted in the 30th minute to put the Bengals up 3-1.

"It felt good because of the goal that they took away," Allen said. "They told me I pushed
a girl or something, and they just took it away."

In the 77th minute, Allen played a through ball to forward Shaunta Pyles, who scored her
first goal of the season and the Bengals' fourth of the game.

DeMarsh said he was pleased with his team's offensive performance.

"Anytime you score four goals you've had a good game offensively," he said. "Allen had
a very good game, she had some very good one-on-one moments. During that game she
was one of the most effective players."

Scoring had been an issue for the Bengals prior to their unbeaten streak. Recently, they
have seen an offensive resurgence, netting 12 goals in their last four games. They looked
to continue this trend against Plattsburgh.

True to recent form, the Bengals registered 19 shots against Plattsburgh. But this time,
they just didn't have that finishing touch, settling for a 0-0, double-overtime stalemate.

"We definitely should have scored," Allen said. "We had a lot of shots. It was just an off
game."

Neither team did much offensively in the opening 45 minutes. Buffalo State had just two
shots at the half to Plattsburgh's one. In the second, the Bengals took 11 shots, but none
found the back of the net.

Bengals' goalkeeper Linda Banfield made four saves in the shutout - her fourth clean
sheet of the season.

"It's always good to get a shutout," Banfield said. "But a win would be better. We needed
three points to secure a playoff spot."

DeMarsh said he believes his team deserved a win.

"We dominated that game front to back," he said. "We pushed them all over the field."

The Bengals are now in a dead heat with Geneseo for the last playoff spot. While
mentioning that his team got a point in a hostile environment, DeMarsh said he sees the
Plattsburgh game as an opportunity lost.

"We had a ton of chances and we squandered every one of them," he said. "If we don't
qualify for the playoffs, we can look back at this game."

To clinch a playoff spot, the Bengals need just one point during their home stand this
weekend, their last weekend of SUNYAC play. They will have their work cut out for
them against New Paltz (11-3-1/4-2-1 SUNYAC) on Friday and first-place Oneonta (10-
4-1, 6-1 SUNYAC) on Saturday.

"We need to finish better, possess the ball better, attack better, do everything better,"
DeMarsh said. "But, we haven't lost since Brockport. We don't drop games. We just
need to find a way to win."
